Dear Andy, I was disappointed to find that the very interesting and informative discussion on TC hoods seems to have died and hope to revive it with the following.... I did not appreciate at first that all the vehicles in the group were TC's, I was confused by the ones with hoods up. Here in Oz (where men are men) we never, ever, drive with hoods up!!! This photograph, taken in 1949 seems to indicate that rear windows came in all shapes and sizes and US drivers are whimps. David E P.S. If/when I do sneak the hood up I put a bucket over my head.

David

Now don't be flicken us stuff over here in the ol US just because we figured
out how the top works. A common curse of men who are men, trying to figure
something out without the directions.

David:

As well you should!!!!!!!!!!

Just a little humor. I will have to agree, that the men of OZ do drive
their cars as they should be driven. I speak from experience, having been
allowed to drive Harry Pyle's TC 157 Kilom. across the wilds of WA acouple
of years ago.

Cheers:

Couldn't help but notice what appears to be bars of some kind running across the back end of most of the vehicles in the pic. Anyone know if this could be some kind of light bar required for safety even back in '49? Main reason I'm curious is that my '47 came with an extra brake light mounted on a bracket in the back that comes up to just below the spare knockoff. We believe the car came to the U.S. through San Francisco as the gentleman I bought it from was the second owner and purchased it there in '53. Anyway, when I saw the picture (and not being a native of California, thought maybe this may have been a state law for CA for night visibility. Just curious. - Terry VP

Looks like some bar run between the antenna bumpers to hold the US-flavored license plate. Not all of them have it. Any other guesses?

These bars are nothing to do with safety or lights...nearly all TC's here in
the USA got what we call "Nerf" bars when they were new. Moss still sale
them...they are after market "Bumpers". The bars that you see were made by
one of the suppliers and they tied the two verticle parts of the Nerfs
together....made a handy thing to tie a bag of clothes to....several of these
bars still exist here.

Terry, who nerfs on his TA without the bar.
