Side curtain Compartment

Post by Bruce J. Obbink » Thu Jan 27, 2000 5:50 pm

In restoring my TC, I noticed there were four holes in the bottom of the side curtain storage compartment. Also, there was a piece of wood lying in the bottom and looked as though the piece of wood was bolted into the bottom of the compartment at one time. Does anyone know if there is some type of wood piece in there or is the compartment fixed with holes in the bottom for air and drainage? Many thanks Bruce J Obbink

Bruce, If I remember from my restoration (still ongoing after eight years - smile) those 4 holes should line up with four holes in your chassis - that's part of the mounting. I also had/have that piece of wood in mine - I think I goofed cause I made it a solid piece of the storage compartment. What I really think is it's used as a strengthener for the compartment and is thru-bolted - after you line up the holes with the chassis. Gene

The wood body frame piece is approx 1 1/4", almost square, and the rear
plywood of the body tub screws to it. I believe the wood sides of the
curtain box are also screwed to this wood. The two bolts you see are the
rear body mounting to chassis bolts that pass through the 1 1/4" wood
piece. Thats what holds the rear of the tub to the chassis.
The side curtain box steel panel goes under the wood frame member, has a
1/2" - 90 degree bend up, and is then nailed to the near vertical plywood
rear body panel.

There are also two water drain holes in the bottom of the steel
compartment.

So, your four holes are original.
