Altette Horns

Post by Skip Burns » Sat Dec 11, 1999 7:19 am

I contacted Abingdon Spares which claimed to have the pointy acorn
bolts for the horn. I've ordered them and will report to you when I've
received them and had a look to see if they're really prewar type
bolts. As for an index of OCC's tech articles, my bulletins go back
only to January 97. BTW, I sent an email to John James, the editor,
griping about the lack of addresses/email addresses, etc., of writers
who either have problems or need assistance. He agreed and will bring
the matter to the board for resolution. This will help those of who do
not reside in the U.K. Cheers, Skip (TB 0304)

ALTETTE HORNS

Post by JERRY BIRKBECK » Sat Mar 21, 2009 4:40 am

Hi Listers

I have just checked Cliff Knight's references to Altette Horns in the MGOCC Bulletin. The article on pages 12-17 by Taff Isaac describes the differences to Altette Horns for the periods 1931-34, 1934-37, 1937-40, 1940-51 and 1951 onwards and the means of adjustment. Apparently the HF1234/1235 versions introduced in the mid 1940's had no rear adjustment facility.
There are some excellent diagrams which may be of interest. If anyone is interested then please contact me off-line and I'll scan the drawings and forward them. Taffs Issac provides an address which may no longer be correct as it was 16 years ago and he offered (then) a repair and exchange service.

I have just checked and he is still going and has a very detailed website:
www.taffthehorns.com
Hope this helps

Jerry Birkbeck

(with an incorrect Altette horn on my TA though it only cost 3 and picked up at an MG event at Stoneleigh several years ago. Though it only makes a croak!)

I have one somewhere. I ll see if I can find it. You need to use multiple gaskets to get it right, three I think. Outside of that, they are pretty simple to work on.

Bill and all who have helped me with this one. Thanks fellows. Taff

the Horn is still a great source for spares.

I still haven't found a detailed overhaul procedure but I'm sure I

have seen one somewhere. I got it working a bit better today so will

wait for my new cover before stripping it down. It should be loud

enough to scare the donkeys out of the road for the time being.

I'll share what I find and if nothing better turns up I'll write a

procedure myself. Meanwhile if anyone has a March 1992 Bulletin

(Octagon Car Club) the index says there is something on the Altette

on

page 12, also an entry in June 93 page 9.

If anyone needs a full repair procedure for the SU pump I have one.

If I can get clearance for the illustrations I stole, I'll ask Walter

to put it on the site - meanwhile email me off list if you need it

now.

Best wishes

Hi,

Are there any TB get togethers planned for this year to celebrate 70th anniversary of the TB here in the UK or elsewhere? It seems a shame to miss the opportunity. I wonder how many we could get together? From the number that seem to exist probably more than 379!

New England T Register - slow response

I sent in my membership over a month ago to join the New England MG T

Register and have yet to receive any acknowledgement, though an email inquiry

Monday did get me a brief reply that my membership had been processed and I would

get a TSO mailed out soon. I used the enclosed membership number to log onto

the site, only to be blocked because the online access had to be approved.

It still hasn't been approved after 4 days. Makes it sorta hard to take

advantage of the benefits I paid $50 for. Is this typical response time for the

NEMGTR? It was highly recommended by a friend as a 'must', but so far I am

unimpressed with the club. By contrast, this group, which is free, has been

fantastic. Figures.

Bob, The NEMGTR is a great organization. They have a fantastic magazine

volunteers so be patience. Its not like they are a commercial

Hiya!

I understand the volunteer aspect better than most - I am Vice President and

Webmaster for my local AACA region, as well as another car club region.

However, I have membership in the Model A Ford Club of America, The Packard

Owners Club, the Studebaker Driver's Club, AACA, and at least a half-dozen other

groups and clubs related to the automobile hobby. NEMGTR is the most

expensive of all and the slowest by far to respond. However, I am also champing at

the bit with the TC and am probably not as patient as I should be. Guess I

need to relax, right?

Yahoo has blocked something I posted earlier today for some reason - perhaps

because it contained a web-link to a very interesting preview trailer for a

program airing on ESPN at 8:00 PM EST tonight about racing at Le Mans.

Try going to "truthin24.com" to see the trailer.

In the first moments of the video you will see some bits of footage from the

1960s, including a few seconds of footage, right about when the announcer is

saying "ultimate challenge," of a red MGB going off course.

Subject: Re: [mg-tabc] Brake cups

I've used silicon in two of my MGs for a long time (14 years on one and 8 years on the other) with no ill effects, and am at this very moment converting the TC to the same. The main reason I'm converting is so that it matches the other cars and allows me to stock just one type of fluid. The reason for running it in those cars is because I'm sick of leaky master cylinders eating away my paint, especially in my wife's MGA!

I'm using Moss rubber in the TC so hopefully I don't suffer the same fate as your friend. I wonder if something else contributed to the failure of the rubber. Modern rubber formulations should be compatible with any standard fluid, silicon or not!

If anyone else has encountered this problem please speak up!

A list member rebuilt his brakes with new Lockheed rubber from Abingdon Spares. poured in the silicon fluid and started bleeding the brakes and found fluid pouring out of the front cylinders. Took them apart and found the cups "lumpy".

This woman is right on!!!!

Wall Street letter of Outrage .......... MUST READ!!!!

She wrote this last August. Can you imagine how outraged she is

today?

(If you didn't see this, she really hits the nail on the head.

I hope everyone reads this and realizes just how socialist this country is

becoming. Like Alisa we should all be outraged).

This letter was sent to the Wall Street Journal on August 8, 2008

by Alisa Wilson, Ph.D. Of Beverly Hills , CA . in response to the Wall

Street Journal

article titled "Where's The Outrage?" that appeared July 31,

2008.

Really. I can tell you where the outrage is. The outrage is here,

in this middle-aged, well-educated, upper-middle class woman. The outrage is

here, but I have no representation, no voice. The outrage is here, but no

one is listening for who am I?

I am not a billionaire like George Soros that can fund an entire

political movement.

< br> I am not a celebrity like Barbra Streisand that can garner

the attention of the press to promote political candidates.

I am not a film maker like Michael Moore or Al Gore that can

deliver misleading movies to the public.

The outrage is here, but unlike those with money or power, I

don't know how to reach those who feel similarly in order to effect

change.

Why am I outraged? I am outraged that my country, the United

States of America, is in a state of moral and ethical decline. There is no

right or wrong anymore, just what's fair.

Is it fair that millions of Americans who overreached and

borrowed more than they could afford are now being bailed out by the

government and lending

institutions to stave off foreclosure? Why shouldn't these people

be made to pay the consequences for their poor judgment?

When my husband and I purchased our home, we were careful to

purchase only what we could afford. Believe me, there are much larger, much

nicer h omes that I would have loved to have purchased. But, taking

responsibility for my behavior and my life, I went with the house that we

could afford, not the house that we could not afford. The notion of

personal responsibility has all but died in our country.

I am outraged, that the country that welcomed my mother as an

immigrant from Hitler's Nazi Germany and required that she and her family

learn English now allows itself to be overrun with illegal immigrants and

worse, caters to those illegal immigrants.

I am outraged that my hard-earned taxes help support those here

illegally. That the Los Angeles Public School District is in such disarray

that I felt it incumbent to send my child to private school, that every

time I go to the ATM, I see "do you want to continue in English or

Spanish?", that every time I call the bank, the phone company , or similar

business, I hear "press 1 for English or press 2 for Spanish". WHY? This

is America , our common language is English and attempts to =2 0 promote a

bi- or multi-lingual society are sure to fail and to marginalize those who

cannot communicate in English.

I am outraged at our country's weakness in the face of new

threats on American traditions from Muslims. Just this week, Tyson's Food

negotiated with its union to permit Muslims to have Eid-al-Fitr as a holiday

instead of Labor Day. What am I missing? Yes, there is a large Somali Muslim

population working at the Tyson's plant in Tennessee . Tennessee , last I

checked, is still

part of the United States . If Muslims want to live and work here

they should be required to live and work by our American Laws and not

impose their will on

our long history.

In the same week, Random House announced that they had

indefinitely delayed the publication of The Jewel of Medina, by Sherry

Jones, a book about the life of Mohammed's wife, Aisha due to fear of

retribution andviolence by Muslims. When did we become a nation ruled by

fear of what other immigrant groups

want? It makes me so sad to=2 0see large corporations cave rather

than stand proudly on the principles that built this country.

I am outraged because appeasement has never worked as a political

policy, yet appeasing Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is exactly what we are trying to

do. An

excellent article, also published recently in the Wall Street

Journal, went through over 20 years of history and why talking with Iran

has been and will continue to be ineffective. Yet talk, with a madman no

less, we continue to do. Have we so lost our moral compass and its ability

to detect evil that we will not go in and destroy Iran's nuclear program?

Would we rather wait for another Holocaust for the Jews - one which they

would be unlikely to survive? When does it end?

As if the battle for good and evil isn't enough, now come the

Environmentalists who are so afraid of global warming that they want to put

a Bag tax on grocery bags in California; to eliminate Mylar balloons; to

establish something as insidious as the recycle police in San Francisco. I

do my share for the environment: I recycle, I use water wisely, I installed

an energy efficient air conditioning unit. But when and where does the

lunacy stop?Ahmadinejad wants to wipe Israel off the map, the California

economy is being overrun by illegal immigrants, and the United States of

America no longer knows right from wrong, good from evil. So what does

California do? Tax grocery bags.

So, America , although I can tell you where the outrage is, this

one middle-aged, well-educated, upper middle class woman is powerless to do

anything about it. I don't even feel like my vote counts because I am so

outnumbered by those who disagree with me.

Hi Terry,

In 2003 Mike and Loretta was in UK with MG TC group. They also

drove around Europe after the UK event. They has some problem with the

starting Motor in Germany near to our place. So one of our TC Member drove

to them and give them all help and assistance. They also spent few nights in

his house in Bad Soden sorting out the mechanical problems.

I had the luck to invite them all to my house. Their daughter was in

hospital for delivery that day. So excited Loretta telephoned from place to

the hospital and came to know that the delevery was smooth and she is a

grand mother. They both were extremely nice to me. After inspecting the

moving chassis of TC 448, we also had lunch together. May be I can load some

of the picture to T-abc site.

So Terry if you ever land in Frankfurt Germany, I promise you that you got a

place here to sleep and also pick up service. I will be back in Germany by

May first week

Have a nice day.

Altette Horns

Post by Tom & Emily Wilson » Mon Nov 02, 2009 3:36 pm

The TC spec shows a Lucas Altette horn HF1234 as correct for the TC.
I've heard or read that th HF934 was used for a very brief time at the
beginning of TC production. This is essentially the same horn as the HF1234
except it has a pressed steel body and those pretty fluted chrome nuts.

Does anyone know details or particulars about the horns on early TCs?

Thanks, Jim. Lynn (aka Taff) is right now restoring a couple prewar horns
for me, and we've conversed a lot. I've posed this question to the group
for another source to confirm supposition.

Hi Tom,

Mine is dated Feb 46, has the notch at the top in the body, and has fluted chrome nuts, which are probably add-ons.
Will check out the #s and get back to you.

Hello Tom. Lee,
I always understood that the taller, fluted nuts were pre-war and the notched body was later in the TC production run, and I've never seen a date-stamped body (unusually for Joe Lucas!). Always something new!

Tom, Lee, Lodge, & all.

The 1234 horn was in 2 varieties, early ones had no "notch" on the top of
the reverse side, later ones had the notch. Both were the same model and
part number, HF1234 and 069248. I can find no reference to any other horn
being used, though the boys at Morris Garages would have happily substituted
another horn if Lucas was out of the 1234s for some reason, instead of
having cars sit waiting only for horns that would otherwise have been
shipped.

Both of the varieties of horn had acorn nuts around the rim that had
elongated domes, but neither used the fluted nuts. (Lucas later began
supplying the HF1234 horns with standard acorn nuts that were not elongated,
I have a NOS one of those.) The part number and date are stamped on the
phenolic insulator/wire holder over the 2 wire connections on the back side
of the horn. The cast metal bodies were not stamped.

Cheers,

Does anyone know details or particulars about the horns on early TCs?

Hi George,

Thanks for the info on the horns.

It appears that there is a lot of 'wiggle room' with respect to nuts on the horns, and elongated dome nuts may be what are used rather than fluted, will have another look.

Also look for more dates, now that we know where to look. With all the crud on the horns, the date was probably not on the casting after all. My error.

Tom, Lee, Lodge, & all.

The 1234 horn was in 2 varieties, early ones had no notch
on the top of the reverse side, later ones had the notch. Both were the
same model and part number, HF1234 and 069248. I can find no reference to
any other horn being used, though the boys at Morris Garages would have happily
substituted another horn if Lucas was out of the 1234s for some reason, instead
of having cars sit waiting only for horns that would otherwise have been
shipped.

Both of the varieties of horn had acorn nuts around the rim that
had elongated domes, but neither used the fluted nuts. (Lucas later began
supplying the HF1234 horns with standard acorn nuts that were not elongated, I
have a NOS one of those.) The part number and date are stamped on the phenolic
insulator/wire holder over the 2 wire connections on the back side of the horn.
The cast metal bodies were not stamped.

Cheers,

Hello Tom. Lee,

I always understood that the taller, fluted nuts were pre-war and the notched
body was later in the TC production run, and I've never seen a date-stamped
body (unusually for Joe Lucas!). Always something new!

Regards, Lodge

Hi Tom,

Mine is dated Feb 46, has the notch at the top in the body, and has fluted
chrome nuts, which are probably add-ons.

Will check out the #s and get back to you.

Altette Horns

Post by Tom & Emily Wilson » Thu Nov 05, 2009 2:23 pm

If this is a duplicate message, my apologies. The first one I wrote may
have gone to the TABC group owner instead of the group, as it's not yet
posted on the list.

What Altette horns used the fluted nuts, and what used the domed nuts to
attach the chrome ring on the front of the horn?
The Altette horn had many different Lucas part numbers, depending on type of
ring (chrome or painted) and the series. The HF917 (1930 to 1936) was
followed by the HF934 (1934 to 1948), followed by the HF1234 (1937 on).

The HF917 (1930 to 1936) and HF934 (1934 to 1948) Altette horn bodies were
pressed steel. These had 1/4" BSF or BSCY slotted cheesehead screws
inserted from the back of the body through the 6 holes to hold the chrome
ring. The FLUTED nut fit onto these screws, and this hardware was tightened
by using a screw driver on the screw head.

The HF1234 (1937 on) had a cast iron body, and the chrome ring was placed
onto 4 1BA and 2 1/4"BSF studs that are threaded into the cast iron body.
Then the DOME nuts (4 1BA and 2 1/4BSF) were tightened onto these studs to
hold the chrome ring (and internal parts) in place. The hardware on these
is tightened by using a socket or spanner on the dome nut.

The spanner size of the chrome dome nuts is smaller than a standard 1/4BSF
size.

The recess on the top of the cast iron body on the HF1234 appeard in 1949.

I THINK this information is accurate, but do not know for sure. Source of
info is data supplied by Lynn Isaac (Taff the Horn).
