Recommended finish for Aluminium Castings

Hi I'm just finishing rebuilding my TC gearbox and am wondering how to finish the bellhousing and remote control casting. The aluminium is nice and clean now but what's the group's view on how to keep them looking that way. The same finish will be applied to the nice finned sump. Hi Chris, I prefer to brush the aluminium a bit and like to leave it as it is. If you polish the surface they say the heat radiating quality will decrease. If you don't polish it regular it will get dim after a while All these polishing and additional chrome will convert a TC to over restored car of a new rich. Hi Chris, I painted the engine/transmission case in my pre-war BMW bike with Eastwood Aluminum paint, as it was pretty scarred (WW2 battle shrapnel?) and needed lots of aluminum filler. The paint did a nice job of covering up the filler and stains, which could not be removed by bead blasting. Yes, I know it will probably run a bit hotter for the 10 miles or so I ride it per year! I'm sure heat transfer would not be an issue for your TC bellhousing and remote control casting but it may be for the finned engine sump. The good thing about paint is you can touch it up. The only way to touch up bare aluminum is to remove the part and bead blast again. JP TC2797

Chris, The lovely finned alloy sump and timing chain cover left the factory with a coat of engine paint, since the engine was assembled first then painted. I have a 1947 YA . The transmission case only was painted green. The rear casting and the bell housing show no sign of ever being painted and are bare aluminum. I feel certain that the transmission has never been worked on as it has only low mileage (57,000) I do not have the engine any longer (long story) so I do not remember if the oil pan was painted Sandy Sanders

Sandy, I didn't say anything about the bellhousing or transmission rear extension being painted because they were not. In addition to period photos of the assembly line, I have also seen NOS XPAG and XPEG engines still in their shipping crates. That was a long time ago but the entire engine including the sump and timing cover were painted and that is how engines were delivered to the assembly line. I also had a NOS MGA Twin Cam engine in the crate, its alloy head, front timing cover and sump were also painted maroon. Of course most of the paint was peeling off in sheets just from sitting since they did nothing to prep the aluminum for paint. Likewise, I'm sure that XPAG sumps and timing covers lost their paint shortly after leaving the factory. Regards, -- Frank < frankgraham@msn.com > ______________________

Hello Chris, I like the finish that glass-bead blasting gives. To see if it's agreeable, take a piece of thick, solid aluminium to your friendly neighbourhood blaster. Be sure to wash everything THOROUGHLY afterwards. Good luck.
