Another Rear Axle question
Hi All
Coincidently I am also working a rear axle problem. The offside (drivers
side) axle is stuck in the housing somewhere.
The hub was a wobbly fit on the splines (visible play when rotated) and the
knock off was filled with dif oil. There was no problem with removing the
hub but the axle is trapped somewhere. It easily slides in and out about an
inch. When pushing in it stops with a sharp clank sound that appears to
come the pumpkin. When pulling out it stops with more of a clunk sound.
There should be a bushing at the end of the axle shaft but I can move the
axle up, down, left and right quit a lot so, if present, this bushing must
be quite worn.
The condition of the wheel end of the spline looks perfect. there is no
sign of wear or rounding over on either the hub or the axle so, considering
the wobbly fit to the hub, it seems that not many miles have been put on the
car since the axle was fitted.
Any advice on how to extract the axle?

Greg,
I'm sure others will comment that you can drive the shaft out of the
differential from the other side. As I recall, I used a length of 1 inch
pipe. What you do if both shafts are compromised I will leave to much wiser
heads than mine.
What has happened is that the interior splines have become compromised,
possibly as a result of trying to "rock" the car between first and reverse.
Burrs have built up at the free end of the splines and are preventing you
from removing the shaft.
There should be little or no wobble of the shaft in the tube. The shaft is
supported in the tube by a brass bushing that has its internal surface
grooved to throw diff oil back up the tube....which a brand new bushing will
do for a few miles. Then, you get diff oil in the hub....and on your brake
shoes! The solution to this is a set of Bob Grunau's hub nuts with integral
oil seal. Put them on and you will be blessed with dry rear brake shoes.
BTW, you will still want to install a new set of the brass bushings for
support of the shaft...just drive them in about an inch or so from the face
of the tube so you can clear the Speedy Sleeves that come with Bob's kit.

Greg,
I'm pretty sure you are having the same problem that I had. My axle shaft
was loose in the hub and slid back and forth enough times that it had
mushroomed on the inner end from banging against the spider. I had to drive
it out from the other side using a 4 foot long piece of 1/2" drill rod. Good
luck.

As you wrote the best solution comes from Bob.
But in the original differential carrier there are two bushes at the ends
throwing the oil back and keeping the brakes shoes dry. Very often these
invisible bushes are neglected. Mistake is also done while replacing by
pressing in the wrong direction. There is a difference between the near side
(passenger side) bush and off side ( driver side )bush. It also had to be
replaced when worn out. If it is sitting proper the oil will not come out
that easy. That is how it came out from the factory. Very often the after
market bushes are made out of inferior Bronze.

Here is a follow up on my original request.
Thanks to all for responding to this question. Invaluable help and
information!
Since my near side axle and hub doesn't leak oil and appears to be tight I
didn't want to yank it to drive out the off side. Also, my off side hub
just slid off in my hand once the gasket seal was freed exposing only the
end of the axle sticking out of the bearing carrier. As a last ditch effort
I drilled and tapped the end of the axle shaft (1/4-20) and rigged up a
puller using a short piece of pipe and a good quality bolt. It worked!!
The axle slowly eased out.
Result is as expected. The axle spline had been damaged (notched) where
engaged with the spider causing excessive play mushrooming of material and
prevented extraction.
Time for some new parts.
