Very interesting comments in section I Peter but awfully simplistic and revisionistic. Bad planning is not the only reason for short sighted decision making in America. One could also claim that if America hadn't been giving Europe and Japan billions upon billions of dollars of America gross national product, we could have had lower tax rates and then everyone else would be singing American standard's tune instead of the other way around. The fact of the matter is the Marshall plan rebuilt Japan and fueled the economy of Japan with billions in aid and new factories while old factories in America were employing GIs returning from Europe and Asia which then led to a global economy. Yes a global economy has now demanded global engineering specifications and some foresighted individuals were pushing this as far back as the 1960s (maybe even longer) but we would not have had a global economy had it not been for the gigantic transfer of wealth by the social engineering of the politicians. The reality is, as the British car industry learned, that changing standards and practices is not an easy or quick task. Cheers, Mike

Just for the record, I'm staying out of this one preferring instead to hang out with the New Zealand Warrior Princess and the English Olivia.
