Re: A couple of Hub and Brake questions
hi Steve - this is sometimes a problem: new hubs can be a thou or two
undersize, and new seals are typically two or three thou oversize! Check you
have the right seals: 2.25" od, 1.5" id, 3/16" thick, and make sure you
press them in straight.
The original brake drum nuts are, incredibly, 3/8" BSF thread but only 5/16"
spanner size and hardly look up to the job (on the back they are holding the
hubs to the bearing carriers, and are, therefore, holding the wheels on!!!),
and the spring washers are very wide (0.8" od). Nowadays, I supply standard
3/8" BSF half-nuts and standard thin spring washers (0.675" od, 0.08" thick)
although we are getting a quote for a batch of large washers. Full nuts can,
with some hubs, hold the wheel away from the Rudge-Whitworth taper.
I use 33 lbsf. ft. of torque (the same as the 8mm small end clamp bolts)
even though in theory 3/8" can go higher, but the studs are not exactly high
tensile! As I have Bob's magnificent Alfin drums, I use flat washers since
the spring washers would really chew up the ali. The thick chunky spring
washers can even chew up steel!

PS in case anybody has forgotten, or new members do not know, I can supply
virtually every nut and bolt for a TA/B/C, in BSF or metric. PLS ask for a
list!
