Water Pump installation

Post by George Smith » Fri May 06, 2005 8:15 am

I went to put a new waterpump in the TC last night and the new one doesn't quite fit. The old one had a slightly concave impeller that was also spring loaded and the new one is almost flat across the impeller. The back of the insert hole on the block looks like it has extra material or wasn't machined completely. Do I need to grind that off so that the new pump will fit or should I try to rebuild the old pump??? Thanks for your help and ideas. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

You might have to grind a little there, and grind a little off of the bottom edge of the pump body. I have seen many new pumps, that do not sit flush against the engine block, as they contact the engine bearer plate. Once grinding away to clear the bearer plate, they work fine. I just replaced my water pump a week ago and it was a REALLY snug fit..... It did all go together withoutany grinding. Maybe I was lucky? I have driven about 15 miles and no leak.....
