On any type of SU fuel pump...If the suction is impeded by a dirty filter or
crud in the line, the points have to remain closed for a longer time. Point life
can be severely shortened. When the chamber is filled and the points
finally are allowed a rest, the spring takes over. The spring can try to push
that chamber load of fuel all day, it doesn't care.
Rebuilding the SU pump on my 1967 MGB/GT was a yearly event after
1973. I tried other types of pump, dual pumps, all failed, gremlins!
I sent my SU's to Dave DuBois (T-ABC member) to be rebuilt and told him I
had no faith in the SU. He asked if I had ever had a tank of dirty gasoline.
Yes! in 1973 I got a lot of rusty water in a tank of gas, but drained the tank
at the time.
I removed the tank and with an articulated mirror and 12V bulb lowered past
the baffles, I could see the internal screen was badly clogged. All those
wasted cuss words on the SU could have been used on something else.
