TC gear ratios

Hello Group:

I am considering changing my TC's standard 5.125:1 back axle gear ratio to something that might allow better cruising speeds for today's driving.  I see that there are at least two other gear ratios available to replace the standard. Would appreciate input (either good or bad) by those who have changed from the standard gear ratio.

My experience is that this is well worth doing.  I have one of Roger Funeaux' fitterd and now have a usable first gear as well as more relaxed cruising at lower revs.  I do have a stage two engine though with larger valves and a 9.3:1 CR.

hi Craig - I have 8/39 (1:4.875), 8/37 (1:4.625) and 9/39 (1:4.33) in stock. The last one is new, specially made for me, and is becoming popular with people with more powerful engines, especially supercharged. The 8/37 is probably the most popular and gives a 10% reduction in rpm for more relaxed cruising. The 8/39 is the TA ratio long sought after by TC owners, but is only 5% higher than standard so the difference is hardly noticeable. My prices are very reasonable compared to the other main suppliers. Craig,  Yes, put in a better ratio!  I have one TC with 4.85 and I have one with a 4.55...infinitely better that the original 5.125.  Both my cars have the T-9 Merkur 5-speed from Hi-Gear and cruising is comfortable. I just swapped a 4.22 with the 5.85...the 4.22 was fine but too long-legged with the 5-speed...around town I never got out of 4th gear...a friend has a stock TC with the 4.22 and he has no problem with the car pulling it. If you use TATerry s article as a basis, with the exception of drilling some holes around the flange, it s basically a bolt-in swap.  Gene GillamSaucier, MS
Hello Group:I am considering changing my TC's standard 5.125:1 back axle gear ratio to something that might allow better cruising speeds for today's driving.  I see that there are at least two other gear ratios available to replace the standard. Inevitably this subject has turned to the use of five speed gearboxes, normally code for fitting a ford sierra box.  The first thing that strikes me about this is: why do you need a five speed box and an higher final drive as surely they both do the same thing?  As far as I know the fifth gear on the ford box is an overdrive gear, which means it is already a higher ratio than the straight through, one to one, top gear of the average four speed box like the TC one.  Using both will surely give a higher top gear than originally intended and, perhaps, one too high for the engine to comfortably handle.

I agree with what you are saying Ian, fifth gear on the Type 9 box is akin to an overdrive unit being 0.8 to 1, (or is it 1 to 0.8) ..  and if my TC was permanently struggling to cope with a 8/37 ratio back end as well, I would do something about it.  As it is, it cruises quite happily at 65 with some in reserve. Unfortunately Robin, the roads are not what they used to be! It is just possible to find a route where no corners have been straightened, no hill tops have been lopped off, and no dual-carriageways have been introduced, but not easy... To simply keep up with modern traffic our 70-80 year old cars need a little help! For years, owners of TCs fitted the higher TA ratio, bored out the cylinders, fitted bigger valves, even superchargers. Most engines by now will have had hardened valve seats installed to take advantage of modern fuels, and use high-technology multi-grade oil. I do agree with you on two things however, VW steering boxes and Ford gearboxes are a step too far - now there is a can of worms opened up (no pun intended!) RogerDevonTC & MGBGT-V8 (with 6-speed 'box from new!)
