Air filter / muffler

Post by michaelponsano » Sun Jan 06, 2019 6:32 pm

I would like to have the air canister/filter powder coated and then install a K&N filter inside but I would also like to make it look stock and untouched. Is there a way to take this apart and fit a replacement top?

Here's one way to do it: http://www.tcmotoringguild.org/techinfo/TClinic-6.pdf - Steve Simmons, TC8975 On 1/6/2019 6:32 PM, michaelponsano@yahoo.com [mg-tabc] wrote:

Michael, Mike Sherrell in his follow up book "TCs for Evermore" describes how to do it. Basically take a square edged tool like a large file and side it down the length of the canister so that it hits the crimped-on lid. Repeat around the whole circumference and the lid will detach. He then recommends a pancake style filter element to replace the original knitted wire gauze that really only stops rocks and small birds. What Mike omits to say is that you also need to remove the next layer inside the canister too which is a dome-shaped piece. That's easily done too. After that the throw-away paper filter type he recommends fits perfectly. He also describes how to refit the lid making it easily replaceable thereafter. Regards Peter

Dear All,

I used a filter material called Veledon which is used as a pre filter for marine diesel engines, was able to use two layers of this material and it seems to work well.

I converted to a paper air filter a number of years ago.  Incidentally the filter used is from a Porsche 912 of 60's vintage, 4 or 5 bucks plus shipping from Rock Auto.  I pretty much gutted the canister after drilling the small welds allowing the various chambers to be removed.  A small layer of foam sits at the bottom of the canister to take up a bit of space under the paper filter.  This as discussed:http://www.mg-tabc.org/library/T-air-cleaner2.htm Works fine.Steve TC2911

#ygrps-yiv-2063720420 P {margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;} To all, I use a paper filter from the 1980 MGB inside a reproduction canister from Moss motors. Canister part No. 372-150 and MGB filter No. 950-770. I feel it keeps the original look and the filter is within the "MG" family. An original converted TC canister will work as well. Michael-In order to optimize the draft tube crankcase ventilation system, easiest thing to do is rotate the canister enough to allow the hole in the valve cover to breathe.   In other words, the "nipple" that normally plugs into the hole (in valve cover) turned out to be a bassakwards attempt on early crankcase ventilation.   Early on, people in the know would often bin the can and install pancake type air filters, and just leave the little hole in the valve cover open.  Problem solved, and corrosive combustion gasses expelled out draft tube. Putting even a light vacuum on the hole is now known to be simply the wrong thing to do, in regards to crankcase ventilation with a draft tube.  It will prevent optimal crankcase venting, and as the engine build ages, cause the sump to become pressurized = dramatic oil leaks.  DuncanTC9866-  From: "Steve S mail@mgnuts.com [mg-tabc]" mg-tabc-noreply@yahoogroups.com> To: "tabc >> mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com >> TABC" mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Sunday, January 6, 2019 6:43 PM Subject: Re: [mg-tabc] Air filter / muffler   Here's one way to do it: http://www.tcmotoringguild.org/techinfo/TClinic-6.pdf - Steve Simmons, TC8975 On 1/6/2019 6:32 PM, michaelponsano@yahoo.com [mg-tabc] wrote:
