Spares List?

Post by SHERWOOD PARKER » Wed Oct 10, 2018 9:06 pm

Greetings Listers?

Would any of you have a copy of, or a where to find, a list of emergency spares to keep in a T-Type that in driven regularly?

I was not clever enough to make a copy when this thread last appeared.

Thanks in advance if you can assist,

I don't carry much in the way of actual spare parts. Mostly just hand tools and repair parts that can't be found easily while out on the road. Everything fits in the tool and battery boxes except for the jack and spare inner tube. Some of it may sound odd but after so many years of touring in the TC, I've found a few things that need to be in the tool box even they don't seem likely to be needed. I'm probably forgetting something but off the top of my head, this is what I carry on long tours... Spare parts (all good used parts, NOT new parts) - Complete distributor with cap and wires, Ignition coil, Fuel pump, Upper radiator hose. Tools - Combo wrenches to fit everything on the car, ignition wrenches, Adjustable wrench, Ratchet handle, Whitworth and small SAE sockets, spark plug socket, Screwdrivers (Magnetic with various tips, large flathead, eyeglass flathead, stubby flathead), small slip joint pliers, needle nose pliers, Small electrician's cutter, wire stripper, lead hammer, tire levers, feeler gauges, scissor jack, small multimeter, small hobby file. Small parts - Spark plugs (used, known good), pair of SU needle valves, SU gasket kit, various screws & nuts, various split pins, brake bleeder nipples (1 each size), short length of electrical wire, a couple electrical connectors, fuel hose (carb to carb), length of generic fuel hose, spare headlamp bulb, spokes (2 long, 1 short, 1 nipple), exhaust gasket, generator brushes, inner tube. On extra long trips I throw in a tach cable and a second spare inner tube. Miscellany - 2 Quarts of oil, small bottle of brake fluid, blue paper towels, a couple terrycloth rags, individually packaged hand cleaner wipes, latex gloves, zip ties, electrical tape, a bit of thin bailing wire, a few toothpicks, misc small engine gaskets or some gasket paper, rim tape. I use rubber bands to hold wrench sets tightly together to keep them from rattling, and put them inside the rags in the tool box so they don't bang against the sides. Anything I put in the battery box is either non-conductive or placed inside something to insulate it so there's no chance that in an accident it could short the battery terminals. - Steve Simmons, TC8975 On 10/10/2018 9:06 PM, Sherwood Parker sherparker1@msn.com [mg-tabc] wrote:

Others are giving their spares lists, but owners of the TA and TB might well consider replacing the expensive twin type 421 6Volt batteries with a single modern12Volt and making an extra spares tool box in the freed up battery space. A suitable battery that fits the existing battery space is the 12v 44ah 400A 175x175x190mm B36 as fitted to smaller cars like the Citroen C1 Its only about 50 delivered so a huge saving on the cost of the original type 421 2 x 6V setup, which will set you back about 150 based on current Ebay low prices. Harking back to the days of Badger (remember him?) - he said that all you need carry is a bottle of wine (screw top) to drink by the roadside if and when you have to call a tow truck... BTW there is an actual place in California called Badger - not a lot of people know that! cheers Roger

Years ago I generated a list that Twist published, based on cross-country trips made by myself, friends, and stories from the OOT.  I no longer have that, but the guiding principle was what to carry that could be useful at the roadside, or in-the-hotel-parking-lot-but-not-available-at-the-local-parts-store.  Makes no sense to me to carry spares that require a machine shop or complex set-up (e.g. internal diff parts).  By the time one has those kinds of problems, you're bedded down at the hotel for a couple days anyway, parts can be shipped in.  Unless you're Dave Zyp and happen to have carried a tripod to pull engines.... In my old cars I carry a basic tool set optimized for that car - the correct and usable box/open combination wrenches, a suitable socket set, the useful screwdrivers, Vice-Grips (standard and needle nose), needle nose and regular pliers.  Volt-ohm meter (cheapo) and electrician tape.  An emery board.  In the TC these tools ride in the tool box along with some rags, the jack, and a nice flashlight.   The parts I carry in the cars include a ready-to-go fuel pump (I dislike rebuilding pumps at the roadside, but carrying points/diaphragm/gasket is a viable option),  water pump (even for the MGB, finding a water pump at the local Pep Boyz has become unlikely), with gasket Electrical:  generator brushes (alternator in the VW Bus),  and a roll of 16g generic auto wire and some various connectors appropriate to the car (Lucas terminals/connectors, spades, rings, etc...), headlamp and taillamp bulbs.  Fuel intake spares:  In the MGs, a baggie with the special bits that hold an SU carb together and a spare float.  In the Bus I carry a "known good" used MAF sensor and dual relay In the TC I carry spare external oil hardlines---doubt they'd break but if they ever do you're really stuck without a replacement (similarly, in the MGB I carry spare oil cooler hoses - while I've not had XPAG oil lines break, I have had an oil hose rupture on a long trip in an MGB.  Messy but fixable at the roadside).   water pump/generator belt distributor guts, two sets - one "known good" set removed at this year's tune-up, and a new set.   "known good" used coil.   head and manifold gaskets On a big trip I also carry a couple of quarts of oil and a couple liters of drinking water.  Maybe a torque wrench if I remember.       ----pps From: "Sherwood Parker sherparker1@msn.com [mg-tabc]" mg-tabc-noreply@yahoogroups.com> To: TABC List mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Thursday, October 11, 2018 12:06 AM Subject: [mg-tabc] Spares List?   Greetings Listers? There is  also a Badger beer brewed in Dorchester, UK, that you could consider stowing in the toolbox instead of the wine in memory of the eponymous vino-carrier! I think Paul Johnson had a similar philosophy, except it involved a lawn chair and a bottle of scotch.    From: "Roger Furneaux roger.46tc@gmail.com [mg-tabc]" mg-tabc-noreply@yahoogroups.com> To: Clive P Sherriff csherriff99@gmail.com> Cc: Sherwood Parker sherparker1@msn.com>; MG-TABC List mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Thursday, October 11, 2018 6:21 AM Subject: Re: [mg-tabc] Spares List?   Harking back to the days of Badger (remember him?) - he said that all you need carry is a bottle of wine (screw top) to drink by the roadside if and when you have to call a tow truck... BTW there is an actual place in California called Badger - not a lot of people know that! cheers Roger On Thu, Oct 11, 2018 at 9:39 AM CLIVE SHERRIFF csherriff99@gmail.com [mg-tabc] mg-tabc-noreply@yahoogroups.com> wrote:
Others are giving their spares lists, but owners of the TA and TB might well consider replacing the expensive twin type 421 6Volt batteries with a single modern12Volt and making an extra spares tool box in the freed up battery space. A suitable battery that fits the existing battery space is the  12v 44ah 400A 175x175x190mm B36 as fitted to smaller cars like the Citroen C1 Its only about 50 delivered so a huge saving on the cost of the original type 421  2 x 6V setup, which will set you back about 150 based on current Ebay low prices.
