Gear reduction starter for TC

Post by Mark O'Day 23 » Sun Sep 23, 2018 7:54 am

Has anyone placed a gear reduction starter in a TC?  I just installed on on my race TC only to find that the shoulder on the starter interferes with the steering column and I can not secure the steering column bracket.  As my TC has a TD flywheel I had specified a TD/TF starter setup so that is has the 9 tooth gear - perhaps there is a TC setup.  The starter is adjustable on the mounting collar and while turning it counter-clockwise about a half-inch or so would appear to solve the steering column bracket problem it appears that I would no longer be able to get the lower bolt in place to tighten it because the shoulder of the starter would prevent that.
if anyone has done this if you could let me know how you positioned the stater body on the mounting collar  to get clearance for the steering column and the lower mounting bolt that would be much appreciated - a photo would be a great help too.
Thanks.

Hie Mark,
We had great difficulty trying to install a gear reduction starter on a TC, encountering in the same problem that you describd. We finally gave up and installed a rebuilt original starter.
We attributed the problem to the fact that the TC had a Datsun steering gearbox conversion.
You may find it helpful to substitute metric allen head cap screws for the original hex head bolts.
Having a TD flywheel should allow you to use a smaller original TD starter, making life easier.
Good luck, my friend.
