Converting from pos. to neg. earth

Post by david » Thu Aug 30, 2018 7:34 am

Hi Listers, This gets regularly discussed, I know, but just to check once again what steps need to be done to convert to neg ground: reverse the battery leads reverse the ammeter leads reverse the coil connections (for proper polarization at the spark plugs) polarize the generator and that s it, right? Thanks, David and TC 3896 Bad Soden. Germany

I think you have covered all the bases ... and every time this comes up I always like to point out that "Positive Earth is a state of mind!" (Even though I converted Lucy's '66 BGT to negative earth years ago, which also requires converting the electronic tach!) - Mike Hughes  - -  '37 TA 0512 On Thursday, August 30, 2018 10:34 AM, "David davidtasa48@gmail.com [mg-tabc]" mg-tabc-noreply@yahoogroups.com> wrote:   Hi Listers, This gets regularly discussed, I know, but just to check once again what steps need to be done to convert to neg ground: reverse the battery leads reverse the ammeter leads reverse the coil connections (for proper polarization at the spark plugs) polarize the generator and that s it, right? Re: Converting from pos. to neg. earth

Since this posting got only one response, I d like to point out my recent experience - reversing
the ammeter leads is NOT a correct step in the procedure to convert from positive to negative ground.
Reversing the ammeter leads resulted in no function at all from the electrical system! Just to set the
record straight in case anyone wants to know. The other steps were correct.

hi David - that does not make sense! The ammeter is a centre-zero device and detects current flow in either direction. It is essentially a voltmeter which measures the voltage drop across a shunt resistor consisting of a short length of heavy gauge resistance wire. Are you sure you had good connections? cheers Roger

I must disagree with you. The AMMETER IS A SOLID CONNECTION. All it does is indicated the current flowing through it. If it did not work when you reversed the connections there must have been a poor connection on your part or the ammeter itself was at fault. Remember that the indicator needle at rest is in the middle. All it does is indicate the current flowing. In it's original wiring the generator charging was indicated by the needle moving towards the right hand side. Had you left it and completed all the other changes all the would have happened would be that the needle would have moved to the left. Why not just transpose the +/- signs on the meter face and all would be well. Just read the meter in reverse. Sandy

Just to set the  record straight in case anyone wants to know. The other steps were correct. David  TC 3896 and TD 20503 Bad Soden, Germany

I m not trying to argue any point, just reporting my experience. I will try to run some more tests today and see what s going on. All I know is, as soon as I changed the wiring back around, everything came to life again - that s all. I ll test it again and see, try to figure out what was/is going on and report back. Maybe the ammeter wasn t making proper connection - stranger things have happened .. David

Did you Polarizes the generator after you converted from Positive to Negative ground? Just asking?
