Fuel starvation problem

Now, here's a nice puzzler to exercise those little grey cells . . .  It was a warm evening here in England yesterday, so I took TC2456  for a good run on a fast country highway for 15 miles.  Then I stopped for half an hour and the engine restarted perfectly (no XPAG fuel-related hot start problem there).  Then I returned by a different route via twisty rural lanes.  On one of these, after 5 miles,

the engine spluttered and stopped on a steep uphill section.

I dipped the tank: 4 gallons.  Then I noticed that the fuel pump was silent and loosened the outlet nut with the ignition on.  Immediately the pump started ticking and fuel emerged from the nut.  I tightened it up again and  the pump continued to tick.The engine restarted normally and I drove the remaining 10 miles home without further incident.  I cannot figure out what the problem was.  Has anyone got any suggestions? It is an electronic SU pump but I am not seeking to connect this to the current debate on another thread of points vs electronic SUs. Many thanks, Roger Bateman

Roger, could be a dirty filter screen in the tank. Possibly when the engine stopped there dirt fell away from the screen when the pump vaccum stopped.

Thanks to everyone who responded.  The problem has not happened again but now I can zero in on the likely faults when / if it does.
