TC will not shift into reverse

Post by Bob Stein » Sat May 26, 2018 8:44 am

A friend of mine with TC 5908 is unable to shift into reverse. The lever will not go into the right position, or the gear is not moving. He just replaced the shifter and checked the cover plate there was no sign of damage. The car has not been run dry of lubricant, and is not driven hard or often. He tried changing the gearbox lube and driving he car around. It shifts into all forward gears smoothly just reverse is locked up. Any suggestions on getting it freed up without removing and/or dismantling the gearbox?

Thanks,

Hi Bob, I had exactly this problem when I first drove TC3040 after a 27 year-long total rebuild. I could select all four forward gears perfectly, but I couldn't select reverse. It was a complete mystery to me as I know the box selected reverse on the bench when I rebuilt it and again when I first fitted it with the engine into the chassis. To cut a long story short I remembered somewhere along the way I bought another remote from a guy as my original remote was badly corroded around the recess that locates the snap ring that holds the gear lever in place. Some of the recess of my original remote had crumbled away. Eventually I found that the PO of the remote had put a small plug (about 1/4 inch long) in the hole under the reverse detent spring, presumably to increase the strength of the spring to stop his the car jumping out of reverse. In my car with new detent springs it was enough to cause the reverse spring to bind, hence the detent ball wouldn't lift sufficiently to allow reverse to be selected. There's just a chance someone has messed with your friends remote in a similar way too. It's worth a check. It was obvious once I had the remote off as the reverse spring appeared to be longer that the other two. Check the length of all three springs when fitted with the remote held upside down. All three spring should be the same length. Best of luck Peter
