Last drop of dino oil

Post by clovermachine@sbcglobal.net » Sat Feb 03, 2018 10:05 am

I recall a story in Road and Track Magazine from the 1970's where oil became scarce and the use of gasoline powered automobiles was banned forever. Author was possibly Peter Egan...? I'd like to locate that story. The main character in the story owned a classic/vintage car and plotted and planned to keep driving his classic. He somehow set up a still in his garage to make 'gasoline' and when he had a supply he would take his car out in the dark of night and zoom around town. This unknown terrorist-motorist was on the government agents wanted list. The punishment was severe. If I remember right... He was out driving one night and was chased by the alerted agents and almost caught; just in time making back to the security of his garage. He would have to wait another month for the accumulation of more 'gasoline'. The story ends with drip, drip, drip from the spout of the 'still'. While on the subject of R&T articles there is another I would like to find and I may have it deeply stored somewhere. The late 80's or early 90's R&T had a series on the '10 Best of". The 10 best was voted on by several automotive journalists from inside and outside R&T. The one I seek was something like 'The 10 Best aesthetic automobiles of all time'. The MG TC and the MG B/GT were both in the 10! I liked that cause I have both a TC and a '67 B/GT for the past 1/2 century. Bill TC5221 B/GT 99514

Me too and I concur. The early 60's B-GT and the TC are second only to the early E type for pure beauty and style. Sorry, my opinion, but the best of Italy is third....and the germans don't even get to play From: "bill@clovermachine.com [mg-tabc]" mg-tabc-noreply@yahoogroups.com> To: "mg-tabc" mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Saturday, 3 February, 2018 10:05:28 Subject: [mg-tabc] Last drop of dino oil   I recall a story in Road and Track Magazine from the 1970's where oil became scarce and the use of gasoline powered automobiles was banned forever. We should start a sub-club, those of us with a TC and '67 GT.  How many others have that specific  combination? I do. '49 TC and '67 BGT daily driver. I have other cars as well but those are the two I'd keep above the others. - Steve Simmons, TC8975 On 2/3/2018 4:03 PM, phil smith mgpsmith@att.net [mg-tabc] wrote:

Well, I have a near miss on the 67 MGB-GT. My B is a 71 MGB convertible. But I do have a TC, an MGA, and an early E-Type. Mind you, none of them are anywhere near show condition and the O.P. would probably retch if they saw them, but they re a hell of a lot of fun to drive!

This can become difficult. 47 TC, and a 70BGT (split bumper) but there is more, a 58 MGA Coupe and a 61 MGA 1600 Roadster. (There are more, but this should be enough. )
