Break-in Oil Again

Thanks to all the responders on my question about synthetic blend oil.  
First, apologies for not saying it's an XPAG sleeved to 1500, Crane mild cam, TC trans.  Oil pressure isn't where I'd like it - 40 lbs at speed, 20 at idle.  I think I put in new oil pump gears, but maybe I should try switching.  
Super powerful compared to my stock TC.
I was directed to an article about oil written by a vintage (flat tappet) Corvette guy.  Sounds like the best step is to not use the synthetic blend until i have a few thousand miles on the engine. 
Valvoline VR1 seems to the right oil, with ZDDP.

Allan I am using Brad Penn SAE 30 at high zinc oil.  I think you should take a look at this oil which was recommended by my machinists.  I know other TC owners who also use it. Brad Penn, formerly Kendall GT1 has continually proven to be a great oil. We use their break in oil as well.  Sent from my iPhone

Thanks Bill.  I think I will get VR1, then use my Hemmings oil next change. Reminds me of when California required a reformulation of petrol here.  I was working for a petrol reseller at the time and our buyer said the stuff will zap gaskets in the fuel line, particularly cork.  Sure enough, every commute alert on the radio talked about cars on fire, including my sister-in-law and an MG friend.  Now, no more fires, probably because all the subject cars already burned! driver, even with mild pressure boost from blower.         Using only non synthetic in flat tappet engines undoubtedly has its roots dating from time EPA mandated reduced ZDDP  in oil due to the additives adverse effect on Cat. Converter. Lots of non synthetic oils have been available with useful levels of ZDDP (Shell Rotella, et al.) However, today there are many ZDDP fortified oils suitable for vintage flat tappet engines, they just cannot be used on cars or bikes with Cat. Converters. As oil companies introduced synthetic oils they had to meet mandated lower levels of ZDDP, hence they got a reputation of being an oil to be avoided. Today particular synthetics are available for non Cat. converter flat tappet engines.         Racing oils with suitable ZDDP levels may or may not be a good choice. This is because typically they have minimal detergent & dispersant additives necessary for keep an engine clean & sludge free. VR1 seems to be an exception, as their specs. show traditional levels of cleaning, anti moisture additives. Racing oils are changed on a short time line & thus don t need these additives.         Redline, Castrol Classic, Driven, Royal purple, Mobile 1, Comp Cams, and many other newly emerged oils are now available with traditional/adequate levels of ZDDP for Flat Tappet wear protection, while retaining desirable levels of detergents & dispersants. Just look at oil companies web site  for Product Data Sheet or Safety Data         When synthetic oils were first introduced, they got a bad rap for premature leakage due to vintage oil seals not being up to task of preventing leaks. When this problem was identified,  oil formularies were modified to address the issue. Old legends are hard to dispel though.         Lastly, new flat tappet lifter designs have evolved that address premature lifter base wear. Bases are machined slightly convex to generate aggressive lifter rotation spreading wear pattern. In addition some brands of currant aftermarket lifters are hardened through an through to Rc 64, if there is any scuffing due to dirt in oil or oxidation from moisture in oil the convex base of the lifter can be refinished indefinably without penetrating any OEM or aftermarket case hardening. Lifters with convex bases should only be used in conjunction with modern cams with lobes that are axially tapered at peak. This complements convex lifter base also encouraging aggressive & desirable lifter rotation.
