Pebble/Laguna Seca

Post by Jay Laifman » Mon Aug 21, 2017 3:10 pm

We just got back from the Monterey Reunion at Laguna Seca. I always love it - but I pretty much always come away feeling like it is in huge need of racing TCs and TDs! For goodness sakes, TCs and TDs made the original Pebble Beach road course, which was what Laguna Seca was originally built to mimic. Admittedly, there as a nice TA special racing. And, certainly I'm not one to talk - I've been looking to find my dad's racing TD and go historic racing with that. But that certainly hasn't happened yet - and it's not like I'm stepping up to buy another one in the meantime. But, if and when I get one, our goal is the Reunion!

Hi Jay

I raced my TC at the RMMR in 2010, 2011 and 2013. Because of some serious race related issues (2 red flags in one day). a change in driver qualification (to be eligible you had to have had a least 3 races in the year prior to the RMMR -I was only racing 2 races a year- and that fact that I could not get my car reassigned to the pre-war group I decided to give it up. It just was not fun anymore, and I had the distinct feeling that there was an effort to get rid pf the priviteers in favor of the teams.

The biggest proble, however, was the group assignment. I found myself competing with Corvettes, Thunderbirds, Ferraris, Alfas, etc in the 1946-1955 era. I felt as if I was a

moving chicane for the rest of the cars.

During this time I was also competing in the Sonoma Historics (now under the leadership of SVRA) and they had a policy of grouping cars based on lap times, not dates. It was a much better situation and in my final race with them in 2014 (I have since retired from racing I has the most fun I had had in many years.

Do not get me wrong, RMMR is a great event, but with the extreme competition of all the different types, HP, and design characteristics of the cars, I do not think it is the best venue for T-Types. And as the definition of Vintage gets more recent, It is only going to get worse for our cars

Yep. We actually met you one of those years. Then, when I heard your car was for sale, I admittedly had to hold myself back from contacting you about it since I was focusing on finding my dad's. We'll see if your car ends up being the one that got away! I have noticed how wide the classes have gotten and how some cars are definitely "moving chicanes" :-) I have a Tiger and an Alpine and was given the opportunity to buy a real factory Alpine race car that raced at Sebring. But I passed as well because of seeing how Alpines, although competitive in the day, just aren't now - so they are just moving chicanes too. Well, that, and I really want to go MG. One of my sons is in college, the other goes next year. They both grew up with me reading them the Red Car, and both have gone to Laguna Seca for most of their lives. The passion is certainly alive in them - and they are experienced racers in karting (though we gave that up recently because of how much intentional contact occurs lately). I only hope that we can make this happen before it's a total waste.

Jim,I will always think of you as the "sustainer of TC racing". Wouldn't it be great if the Santa Barbara Friday night races were still held like in the '60s. Al Moss would be proud! Sent from Bob Wills' iPhone

I just bought a racing TC this year with the thought of going to Monterey.   Its a race I've always wanted to do and I see no shot of getting in with my MGB.  I am curious how best to try to get the car accepted and from what I'm hearing it may be an issue with classification.
If anyone has any suggestions I'd love to hear them.
Thanks!

Speaking from the Right Coast, we are particularly sensitive to some of the vintage racing issues mentioned in this thread.  Speed differentials and cornering agility in mixed Groups are particularly a problem.  Add in drivers with only one or two races a year and you are bound to have a certain level of tension and dismay.  This, of course, is after the consternation over provenance and suitability.  Our answer to these dilemmas and more is: MURRAY SMITH!  Friendly, firm and forthright, Murray herds the cats into reasonable formations which everyone uneasily acknowledges is about the best you can do.   We simply cannot please everyone, but we do work very hard to provide as level a playing ground as vintage racing permits.  The attached is going out to all competitors entered in the Lime Rock Historics.  It is our continuing effort to instill safety first in the event.   _Peter Roberts, Chief Steward

If you want to see TBs, TCs, TDs and even an occasional TF (or pre-war MG) may I suggest you come to the northeast. The Lime Rock Historic Festival will be held Labor Day weekend (Sept. 1- 3, but no racing on Sunday) and we have 10 T-series cars racing. Other events that often get a good T-series turnout are the: Put-In Bay Road Races ( http://www.pibroadrace.com/ ) which will be held next week and the Collier Cup at Watkins Glen ( https://svra.com/events/2017-us-vintage-grand-prix/ ) September 10. Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix generally held mid July. (Did I miss any?) Mark Sherman

I was at the last Lime Rock Sunday race, when a state police officer walked onto the track at the start / finish line during a race, and put his hand up to stop the race under green flag conditions! Must have been many years ago as Lime Rock never races on Sunday. Besides that they have a much better relationship with the officers now and I don't think you will ever see that happen again.   Ed Callo   In a message dated 8/22/2017 1:56:20 P.M.
