TC 0251 was indeed a prototype. It's listing in the factory production log
gives no production date but bears this notation:
"EXPERIMENTAL CAR REF MG/21".
The engine number is also oddball: XPAG 6946-1, later changed to XPAG 1163
(anyone have that engine now?) This is the car that features in so many
brochure photos (CJB 59, the ex-TB demonstrator), and was cobbled together
by Henry Stone before actual production started.
On Sept. 20, 1945, a series of photos were taken at the factory - many
feature views of TC 0251 (you've seen 'em a million times) but there are
also several shots of TC 0257 in rolling chassis form, complete w/ engine
and firewall in place. (TC 0252 - TC 0266 were all begun on Sept. 17). So it
is possible to make a direct comparison between the prototype and production
version from photos taken on the same day.
I've NEVER heard of TC 0250, though I know TF 0250 does exist, and I've
heard of a possible TA 0250 - can anyone shed further light?
Cheers,
Pete

I always thought MG began all their model series with the number 251 which
they got from their works phone number which was Abingdon-251. This number
can be seen as the works contact number listed in your TC owner's manual.

Correct Badger.....but the 0251 "beginnings" of some models were pre-production cars, while others were the actual first production car - I believe.

Re: More early TC info.
There was definately a marked TA 250 chassis which was in
Devon in the 1960s and was slightly different to the production
TA/TB chasssis
