Anyone out there give me the differences between the TD and TC bell housings?
Thanks.

Re: bell housing question
71/4" TD and Morris 10 bell housings will fit a TC if you machine away the
smaller TD bearing locating spigot and bore a larger diameter groove for the
TC front bearing size. Then make up a steel ring to substitute for the TC
spigot. Or, weld up the spigot area and re-machine to the larger TC
diameter. The eight bolts line right up and the rest of the bell housing is
the same. Of course the TC clutch operating arm is totally different but the
clutch shaft is 5/8" on both TC and TD.

Re: bell housing question
Bob,
You said in a previous post on a similar subject that there was a Bellville
washer between the Bell housing spiggot and the Mainshaft Input
Shaft Bearing.
Are you sure?
I dont recollect this (there are washers INSIDE the box) and measuring
a couple Boxes and Bell housings here in the workshop indicated
there is no space anyway - and the washer could only be about an
1/8 inch wide
Seems to me the spiggot just locates the bearing approximately but
fixes the bell housing position accurately.

Clive

PREVIOUS MESSAGES
I agree, the factory never fitted a gasket between the bellhousing and
gearbox.
The bearing extension spigot on the bell housing should contact the outer
race of the front ball bearing to locate it. If you install a gasket on the
main joint, no matter how "thin", the spigot will be pulled away from the
outer race. Hence the bearing and input shaft can move back and forth in the
gearbox casing. No good.
The TC gearbox uses a flat and bellville washer behind the spigot to ensure
some pressure on the outer bearing race.
For unknown reasons, the TD/TF gearbox has none of these washers and so the
bearing location depends entirely on the accuracy of the spigot extension.
It may be a good idea on these gearboxes to install some belleville washers
to ensure the spigot bears against the outer race.

Re: bell housing question
Hi Clive,
Yes, there is a wide washer and a belleville washer behind the spigot on
the bellhousing. The washers are OUTSIDE the box. Similar washer pair are
installed at the rear ball bearing. Take a look at the TC Instruction
Manual, page 76, item 5 for the rear bearing, item 9 for the bellhousing
bearing. These washers are N11 and N12 in the TC parts book.
Yes, the spigot diameter locates the bellhousing accurately and the spigot
length and washers locate the end float ( which should of course be zero ).
For some unknown reason, MG decided these washers were not required on the
front bearing for the TD gearbox but did continue to install them on the
rear ( center actually ) ball bearing.
Do you have any extra TC gearbox parts? I need a cover/remote for a TC. I am
going to rebuild a TC gearbox for a guy but somehow the remote/cover got
lost while the car was in storage. He inherited the car in baskets from his
father. I have an extra remote/cover in poor shape that will work but am
trying to find a better one for him.
Also, any extra TC bell housings? I have some TD ones that I can convert but
would prefer to buy a TC one ready to go.
Hopefully spring will arrive this week and I can get my TC out and on the
road after a 5 year repaint job which included installation of a new body,
new rear fenders , rebuilt engine and gearbox etc.
Best regards, Bob Grunau

Re: bell housing question
Thanks Bob. I now recall that Al Moss sold me one of my three housings as a
TC unit, which it is. I see the diiference. One of my TD units has a
modified strengthened boss on each side for the cross shaft bearings-looks
like they were responding at the factory to the inherent weakness in the
original.
That would be a late TD/TF unit with 3/4" cross shaft and re-inforced
bosses. It also has a slightly greater front to back location of the cross
shaft to clear the late TD/TF 8" clutch. This bellhousing can also be
modified to suit the TC however the cross shaft location may require a
slightly greater offset throw-out bearing to compensate for the different
cross shaft location.

Re: bell housing question
Sorry, no idea of the differences ,if any, but somehow I do have a TD clutch
lever still on cross shaft that I would gladly trade for a TC ditto; if
anyone's interested.
