Following the recent thread on the Tucks, I did a bit of local research
here in Cape Town. Here is what I learnt from Ralph Clarke who has
been in MGs as for longer than I can remember and is still in regular
contact with a Susan Tuck.
After 5 years in the army on the technical ordnance side during WW2,
George rejoined the Nuffield group in their export company. He was
instrumental in setting up TC exports to Europe via Woodhouse in
Germany. Woodhouse was also the prewar agent for MG but he
apparently spent the war years in Britain.
He was also reponsible for expanding the US TC/TD market as
Nuffield's Export Manager and it was during this time that he set his
sights on South Africa.
The Tucks arrived in South Africa in 1958 when George was
appointed General Manager of the British Motor Corp. assembly plant
at Blackheath here in in Cape Town. He held this position until he
retired in 1969.
The Tucks never lost their interest in MGs and until he died about 2
years ago, George was National President of the South African
MGCC.
Susan is in her late 80s and more or less bed ridden but still very
much alive. She remains a Vice President of our MGCC - Cape Town
Centre. Ralph tells me he will be visiting her this week.
Their only child, John is also still in Cape Town.
