Turn lamps

Post by capaciousmg@aol.com » Sat Mar 30, 2002 3:19 pm

T-Fellows I currently do not have turn indicators on my TC. You guys that are running D-Lamps at the rear, do you wire in a function box to take over the brake circuit on either side when the turn indicator is on? Or, do you wire in a separate lamp or element for the turn indicator? Or, do you avoid the D-Lamp altogether when wiring in turn indicators? My question is specific to the D-Lamp, as I do not want to add any other lamps to the car. Joe Potter Eugene, Oregon USA

Joe

When I did mine a number of years ago, I used an MGA relay, pretty easy using it.(it takes over the brake circuit) The D lights can be used as is, I would change the bulbs to Halogen bulbs in the D lamps, you may have to work with them to get the bulbs to fit.

This is the same relay used on the later TD's and all TF's. I used it along with a special harness and other components to put turn signals into an early TD which didn't have the turn signals. Blake

Mine have an extra bulb mounted in the D lights,I am rebuilding this TC and have not run it yet but the turn light seem to work fine. From M.G.( Meismer's Garage) Rolland Meismer Burlington,Iowa U.S.A. 1946 TC #3409--1951 TD #5522

They were on the car when I bought it. I am just now working to remove the dash to replace it and may be able to sort out the wiring. They drilled a hole in the back of the D light and added a bulb socket to take the extra bulb, it is a tight fit but there is room. The switch is mounted on the dash, but I am going to mount it under the dash to keep it out of sight from the originality police. The front lights have 2 filiments.
