Dean. I seem to remember that it's MB 140, but I promise to check David Lodge. Dean Jensen wrote:

140 is stamped on the bottom of my shells , which are steel instead of brass I think. Would that be possible? Cheers, Lee Jacobsen, TA2969 Tickford

Jack

Thanks for the information, another email made me realize that the B is for brass, I almost sure this shell is steel (rust inside), this came off of a TA, may not be the correct one, no lens, do you have any numbers for a TA? Thanks again. No border on your email

Cheers Dean

G'day Dean:

The number I have on file for the TC headlamp shell is Lucas Mod.# MBD 140.

M= Standard lamp with separate reflector and lens. Reflector held with rubber bead.

B= Brass ( Chromium Plated ) Body.

D= Domed Lens.

140= 7 1/2 " aperture ; 6 " depth , excluding lens.

Now that I reckon is for the later lens lamp , the flat glass with " U " pattern will probably have another code lettre in its description. That is all I can remember.

My Lucas Parrts book shows all MG Model 140 lights as being MBD140, ie chrome plated brass bodies and chrome plated rims.

MD140 lights are usually steel bodies and designated Black Finish, C.P.R., 8 3/8 rim dia.etc ( C.P.R. =chrome plated rim ). These lights were found on a bunch of vehicles, including Morris 10. So if you have a steel light body it probably came from a Morris/Singer/Hillman etc and not an MG.

BTW, TA headlights had a single screw fixing of the rim that threaded into a loose steel clip on the light body. For reference see Blower page 312, bottom of page. The photo on page 313, fig.27 does show the TC type pull clip but this photo is intended for TA and TC and was showing removing of the rim.

The Instruction Manual for TA and TB also clearly shows the TA screw rim fixing on page 92, illustration No. 64 and also refers to the screw on page 91.

Now where can I buy some of these special fixing screws?

So as far as I can tell, TA and TB had the screw fixing. The spring pull clip to remove the rim started with the TC??

Regards, Bob Grunau.

The rims have a pronounced turned in lip like those used for the Jaguar tripod set up. The TB lenses are the Lucas "difusa" type which is flat frosted glass...part #13/4 like on a J2. Doug, Because among the pedantic purists who spend too much time looking at factory photos because they are still trying to get their cars back on the road...Sue Tuck shows up in this very 1930s dress in many MG pics. of many models of cars every time we open a book. She was the factory photograper's wife ( George Tuck ), a very attractive young woman who drove many MGs in that dress. Kind regards, John TB#0398

With respect to the TA rim special fixing screw and plate that it goes into, I picked up three NOS screws and plates from Abingdon 25 years ago. Still have one of each. The others are on TA2969. The screws would be fairly easy to duplicate out of stainless and the plates are straightforward. If there is any interest, a batch of 20 of each can be made for $5 each prox. by a retired aircraft machinist. As an alternative, Bassett's Jaguar has almost the same screws out of stainless for around $6 ea. They hold on the rims for the XK120. Hope this helps. Cheers, Lee Jacobsen, Dearborn, MI TA2969 Tickford.
