Suspension rebuild

Post by steve.fielder@talk21.com » Fri Jan 25, 2002 12:51 am

Good Morning T Typers, I am currently rebuilding the rear suspension and have encountered a small problem, all of the old rubber bushes in the links were one part. Having ordered new bushes from Moss (UK) I appear to have double the number of bushes required! If I offer up the new bushes they appear to be too long to fit two per location; 1. Have I ordered too many bushes and should only use one per location? 2. If I need to use two do I have to fettle the new ones to fit lengthwise? I have trial fitted one and it appears to be too short, or will it lengthen when the pin is fitted? I trust you can understand this vague description!! Regards Steve. If I understand you correctly Steve you are putting new rubber bushes into the spring and drop link eyes and originally these were one piece. Do you mean that they were the correct width with a locating lip on each side? It is quite common for these bushes to be split as they are easier to fit from either side of the eye (and the suppliers only have to carry single, overlenght bushes which can be cut down to fit). If this is so, and the new ones have only one locating lip, then you would have twice as many. In this case just cut them down to slightly too long so they nip up a bit (a hacksaw works well)and push them in. If you need a little rubber lubricant old brake fluid or silicon grease is better than expensive KY jelly - for this purpose at least! Ian T. ---
