replacement engine

Post by steve.fielder@talk21.com » Mon Dec 10, 2001 1:24 pm

Hi to all my `47 TC has recieved a replacement engine number XPAG A71853. On the offside of the block there is another plate bearing the following information; Morris Motors Replacement Engine Bore Size +040" Crank Size R2 Shop 1 The bore size is self explanatory but what does "R2" and "Shop 1" denote if anything? All answers greatfully received Steve Fielder TC4219 -------------------- talk21 your FREE portable and private address on the net at http://www.talk21.com

Hi Steve, R2 refers to the crankshaft grind. In your case it is .5mm undersize. (approx. 0.010"). I do not know "Shop 1" means, altho' it is probable the MG shop number where the motor was reconditioned. Best Regards, Hugh

Oops, that should be approx. 0.020" undersize and not 0.010". Hugh

No idea what the R2 stands for but I have an XPAG with an RS designation which I have never been able to come up with an answer for. Anyone know???

RS = Standard unground crankshaft (2.047 in. main, 1.772 in. rod) R1 = First regrind diameter (2.027 in. main, 1.752 in. rod) R2 = Second regrind diameter (2.007 in. main, 1.732 in. rod) Note that those sizes are in 0.020 in. increments. Today we're accustomed to bearings (and regrinds) sized in 0.010 inch increments. -- Chip Old 1948 M.G. I heard that R2 indicates Rod journal is .020 undersize. RS would be standard. If the mains were done then there would be an "M" desigantion also. Again, this is only what I have heard and have no proof that it is fact. Would seem strange to me the factory would grind the rod journals but not do the mains just to give a fresh surface. According to the TD/F workshop manual R2 refers to .5 mm undersize on both rods and mains. This is about .020" undersize. There is no mention of a "M" designation in the manual. It appears the factory rebuilt motors were ground to the same amount undersize on both rods and mains (R4 is 1.00 mm undersize). Why on earth anyone would grind the mains as a matter of course when they do not need it is beyond me. I just looked at my "Y" manual which has: Standard, R1- .3mm, R2- .5mm, R3A- .75mm, R4- 1.00mm, and R4A- 1.25mm. As in the TD/F manual there is no mention of the mains and rod journals being ground to different undersize. Hugh Pite in stormy B.C.
