Is there a consensus about how high the seat back is supposed to sit above the body? Also, is the bottom supposed to touch the floor or does it sit up slightly? - Steve Simmons, TC8975

Hi Steve, The seat back is positioned in relationship to the bottom of the seat base. At the back centre of each seat base you should have a hinge/bracket (each half about 6 x 2 inches). One half is screwed to the seat base and the other slots into a metal bracket screwed onto the back of the seat base. This bracket is positioned so that the open end which accommodates the hinge is at the bottom edge of the plywood seat back. The seat bases are positioned first, then the seat back is dropped on to the free ends of the brackets. This is a bit fiddly so a second pair of hands is useful at this point. I can send photos if necessary but I think it should be clear. Hi Nick/Steve,  on page 56 of Sherrell's TC's Forever,  it says very early seat backs were taller and sat on the floor behind the seat squab, but the later seat design has a longer squab and the 'seat back' sits on top of it.  The reference to what is regarded as being 'early' is from TC 0251 to TC 1850.  Also the earlier type of 'guide' for the hinged bracket is shown as having a swaged section about two thirds up with a thru tapped hole. Steve, the seat back bottom edge sits on the seat hinge that's attached to the squab.  Best way to adjust the "height" of it is by placing a small pair of wooden blocks under the plywood edge - if you want to raise it.  

My early TCs have a nut and wingnut thumbscrew in the hinge cover sleeve that's attached to the seatback.  As Clive pointed out, later TCs (circa TC1850 on) didn't have this nut.  The pressure of the thumbscrew won't hold the seatback up - hence the need for my wood block to support it.

Height of the seatback is really a comfort issue; most of the factory photos I've seen it looks like the seatback is not raised.

Thanks Tom, that helps.  My seat back base dimensions are not correct, and someone also added over an inch to the bottom (and moved the brackets down to match) which I assumed would make it stick way up but it does not.  So I'm trying to figure out what's going on.  Also, Robert pointed out that seat height over the body is relative to where the seat bases are positioned for and aft, which is so obvious that I never even thought about it.  That would also explain the wide range of height difference between all the cars I've examined in photos.  Seems it can vary an inch or two depending on the driver's leg length.  Thanks to all both on and off list for suggestions.

I recently bought a tonneau bar, but it is unclear how this goes on without interfering with the seat back restraints/adjusters which have been there since I bought the car in 1967.
