MGTC 1947
An attempt to pass the next English MOT highlighted a problem with the kingpins. The shafts are tight but the guy showed me by raising the front wheels with a steel bar (whilst jacked up) the uplift movement. There appears to be one shim (large washer) which is not sufficient to stop it moving up and down about 1/8-1/4 of on inch.
I have to fix this problem within the next 48hrs to enable me to attend a gathering at Donnington Park, Nottinghamshire, England - I need advice help.
Is this something that can be remedid in situ or does the whole front stub axle and a-like have to off to enable some work to be done - what ever that is?
I would very appreciate some help here in what to do.
Regards.
Chris

Re: [mg-tabc] Kingpin Uplift problem. Chris - even 1/8" is hard to believe, especially if it passed the MOT last year!
The only way to fix this is to remove the stub axle, by first removing the king-pin. These are usually loose in the axle eyes, but in the worse case the whole axle will have to be removed so you can press them out. If loose enough to tap out, the whole job can be done in an hour.
There should be a bronze thrust washer, about 1/8" thick, between the bottom of the axle and the steering knuckle, so that the weight of the front end of the car is taken by it. Above the axle there should only be 4 thou clearance, and you can either simply fit steel washers to achieve this or make up new thicker bronze ones.
I have some of the Torrington needle roller races with the steel thrust washers which will give you a greater total thickness, or you can just use the washers: either way you will have to measure the gaps exactly.
