half shaft questions

Post by sculptart@aol.com » Mon Jul 02, 2001 1:44 pm

To All, Coming down Gore pass in Colorado a couple of weekends ago, I started to hear some noise from the RH rear wheel. Upon inspection this past weekend, I find the brake drum was scraping the backing plate due to some bearing looseness. Straightforward to work on, but upon removing the hub, I discovered the half shaft had broken...approximately 1/2 inch from the end. The splines were still in contact with the hub and were able to continue to work. Has anyone had this occur to their car and what would have caused it? I seem to recall when I had new hubs mounted to the half shaft the machine shop that pressed the old ones out and new ones in, said a lot of pressure had to be used. Could this have cracked the tip off? A couple of other strange things, the oil slingers are missing ( really needed?) and the half shaft looks like it does not line up in the axle...it is slightly forward of centerline. Could this be a bent axle housing, and is it possible to straighten the unit? Lastly, where could I economically find the large socket tool to remove the lock nuts? Has anyone tried the hub nut socket Moss sells for the early MGB banjo axles? The size is 1 61/64"...will this fit? Thanks to all, Ben Cordsen, TC 4260

Ben If your comment about "the large socket tool to remove the lock nuts" refers to the castelled nuts, I empathise. Mine were destroyed beyond words by the previous application of a cold chisel and 4lb hammer (or equivalent). I bought new nuts through Moss (UK) and had a friend machine a suitable socket customised to fit the new nuts (which were not symmetrical by any stretch of imagination). As a result, the old were removed with brute force and, with the help of some Spanjaard grease, the new fitted (and can be easily removed) with ease! Suggest you determine dimensions "in situ" as the nuts appear to be individually machined; and therefore present different dimensions! What a mess...I will have to use brute force to remove the old nut and also customise something to put them back together and do a good job. My best, Ben
