Gearbox Oil

Post by m.jablonski@mei.unimelb.edu.au » Tue Jun 12, 2001 6:26 pm

Dear Listers I want to change my gearbox oil and was wondering what other listers use in their TC gearboxes. I was sold some Penrite Gearbox Oil 30 but now wonder whether it is too light. Penrite's brochure states that it is "for use in manual, overdrive and pre-selector gearboxes, or where an engine oil was originally used." The original oil was specified as a 140 grade gearbox oil and I would have thought that a 90 or 80W/90 oil without EP additives would be the best. The car currently appears to have a modern 90 (or thereabouts) oil with EP additives (judging by the smell). Has anyone used Penrite's Transoil 90? This is a GL1 monograde gear oil. The Gearbox Oil 30 is a GL3 oil with no friction modifiers or EP additives. Has anyone used this oil? Mark Jablonski Melbourne Australia

Mark, I use Penrite 140 (just about to move to Castrol 140). It seems to work fine, but I would be interested to hear what lister have to say about all the locations round the TC (or in my case TB) and which oil/grease they are using. E.G. Steering, Axle, Engine, Gearbox, Lube points (I use oil not grease). I have seen several comparisons of modern oils with those recommended in the lube charts, but would like to here from you lot. Mike The Lubricants I use in my 1947 TC (standard but Shorrock supercharged XPAG; Standard gear box; Ford escort diff 3.99 and half shafts) are:- Engine Penrite HPR 40 or Penrite 20-60 Gearbox Penrite HPR 140 Axle PenriteHPR140 Steering Box Penrite Steering box Lube (140 grade) Grease Points Castrol EP My engine oil consumption works out at around 250 miles per pint ( mostly used by the shorrock ie.upper cylinder lubrication! the rest dripped on the drip pan!!) The oil pressure is steady at 60lbs at 3500 revs(drops to 20 at idle)oils changed at 1500 miles or yearly Trust this is useful Paul TC 3348

Hi Mark! I'll add my 2 cents on the topic of gear oil. I can't remember who put me on to it, but I've been using BOSTON GEAR Mobil 600W Enclosed Gear Lubricant for all 140 weight oil applications on the TC (gearbox, rear axle and steering box). Boston Gear Catalog No. 51492 made by Mobil oil. It's available in the US from Berry Bearing Company outlets. I feel it is really great stuff and makes the gearbox noticebly smoother operating and quieter. You might want to check it out. I like to add a tube of FIN-GEAR + TEFLON which is very hard to find and I beleive is made in Holland. It's the only additive that makes a very noticeable difference in performance and was recommended to me by an independant car mechanic who's used it for years and swares by it. I'm sold on it, but good luck finding it. David (TC 3896)

Hey guys I am using in the gearbox TD, on recommendation of Bill Hollingsworth (famed East Coast TC race car Hot Shoe) a synthetic gear lube called AISYN Pro Gear 21 it is a race sreies 80w type 2. These folks are in Ohio (around the corner from Australia) Aerospace Lubricants Inc. 1505 Delashmut Ave. Columbus Ohio 43212, 800 441-9160. Bill uses it in his highly successful TC race car and the shifting is crisp and sharp. I am also using Castrol 5-50 Synthetic oil in the engine with the Marshall blower and upon inspection a few years back both cam lifters and bearings look super (break-in was on mineral oil) the oil pressure after a long hot run is higher than it was on mineral oil (I am resisting the Viagra comparison). and I have no greater amount of oil leakage after I use this and I have the rope front seal, and stock rear main with drain tube cut short.Actually the engine is very dry. I will throw my hat in the ring. I would recommend using Redline Synthetic in both gearbox and dif. 75W 140 NS in the Trans. and 80W 140 GL5 in the Dif. The gearbox oil is mfg. for manual trans. only, and neither will harm yellow metal parts. Cheers: Skip Kelsey....................... At 01:00 AM 6/13/01, MikeMarjot@aol.com wrote:

I Have to agree with Skip. I used the Red Line in my TD gearbox, and it shifted like a Chevy. (Thats a compliment, BTW..!) It must really scoot around in there, and really lube every possible area. Regards Mark TC8126
