crank pulley

Post by Gregory L. Garnett » Thu May 17, 2001 12:10 pm

I am replacing the front seal on my xpag engine with the new lip seal instead of the rope seal. I have gotten the radiator off but can not get the nut holding the pulley off. The pulley keeps turning. I have the car in gear but that makes no difference. How do I get the crank from turning while I try to loosen the nut? Put on the emergency brakes while the car is in first gear. Surely your engine can't turn over then. Gene

I think an air impact gun will be your answer. Bob TC4946

Two cups of epoxy resin into number one cylinder with piston at BDC. Let harden. The crank pulley bolt should now present no problem. Anonymous.

Greg we put correct size socket onto a long breaker bar, wedge the bar into the chassis (left side) have someone hold it in place and than pull starter knob.A little dramatic but works most everytime. The Epoxy in #1 cylinder does not work as good in the long run. Joe

hi Greg - a less dramatic way than some of your replies, is to stop the crank from turning by locking the starter ring gear. special tools are sold for this but you can improvise with a large screwdriver or whatever. a 1/2" drive socket with an "L" adapter will just go on behind the cross tube. slip a 4 foot length of steel tube over it for leverage, but think where it might go when the dog finally gives way! you don't want to end up replacing a wing, or a headlamp shell... cheers Roger PS are you really sure you want to change that seal??? the original can work just fine, but several folks have had bad luck with the lip seals. whilst on this subject, can anyone think of a good reason why the other end of the crank could not be sealed with the same sort of graphite impregnated rope, or a modern equivalent? if it works at one end, why not the other? could be better than all the futile attempts with lip seals... Wheels on the ground, in gear, emerg brake on, Generator belt tight; try "impact" by hitting the breaker bar/spanner/etc sharply with the K/O hammer. Otherwise the clutch is slipping, probably no clearance for an air impact, remove starter (this could be a pain in the A) and hold the ring gear with a screwdriver or prybar, etc while "breaking the pulley nut loose. good luck Will TC 8828EXUt

Hi, I have had good luck with the front lip seal. Since you have to remove the pan to install it, just stick a hammer handle between the front counter weight of the crank and the block to stop the crank from moving and remove the dog nut. This way no components to the rear of the front crank counterweight are stressed in any way.
