Brake / Clutch Pedal cross shaft

Post by George Arber » Wed Apr 11, 2001 1:43 am

Fellow inmates,
How is the brake / clutch pedal cross shaft normally held in place axially on a '49 TC ?
The (original ?) which I removed had a split pin at one end only and so has it's replacement. The 5/8 inch dia. shaft is a push fit in the chassis and it's mating bracket, and when assembled is only long enough enter the inner wall of the chassis. It could therefore work its way out towards the gear box.
I could of course make a shaft long enough to extend completely through the chassis and then pin it at both ends but somehow I don't think that was how it was done originally.
Also there is a gap of approx.1/2 inch. between the brake pedal boss and the chassis, and to prevent the pedal from sliding axially towards the chassis a ' Thackery' (double coil spring ) washer had been fitted. Is this normal ? I wonder why originally, the boss on the chassis side of the brake pedal was not extended to take up this clearance ? Oh Hum !

Brake / Clutch Pedal cross shaft

George My car was also fitted with the thackery washer on the brake/clutch pedal shaft. I can only assume that this is done to avoid the need for close tolerance fitting and to compensate for wear. I don't have the original shaft, but the shaft I bought from the Octagon Club has a split pin at each end. I am thinking of modifying the shaft by drilling a small hole through the centre with cross drillings to the pedal positions and then fitting a grease nipple at one end. This would allow the pedal pivots to be properly lubricated. The problem is that I wouldn't then be able to use the split pin at one end to retain the shaft. Perhaps an external circlip would be the answer. Has anyone else tried this modification? -----Original Message----- From: George Arber [SMTP:george.arber@virgin.net] george.arber@virgin.net]> Sent: 11 April 2001 09:43 To: mgtabc Subject: [mg-tabc] Brake / Clutch Pedal cross shaft Fellow inmates, How is the brake / clutch pedal cross shaft normally held in place axially on a '49 TC ?
