Ignition switch
Greetings Kimberites,
Has anybody experience of changing the barrel lock in the ignition switch
of a 1946 TC which they are willing to share? For me the incentive to
have a go is quite large since a replacement switch from Moss will cost
ukp175 including VAT and P&P, whilst a new barrel lock from the Octagon
Club will cost about ukp5 inclusive. Alternatively, has anybody an
ignition switch which they are willing to sell at a price which does not
include the leg as well as the arm
.
Many thanks,
--

Its a bit fiddly and best done with an assistant. With care it can be done as follows: Put key into the lock and unlock. Undo the little nut on the back which is usually soldered to the screw thread with a dab of soft solder to stop it undoing in use. Get an assistant to carefully ease the barrel lock with key out without twisting, whilst you hold the rest of the switch tightly together to stop it flying apart or rotating. Get the assistant to insert the new barrel lock with key inserted in exactly the same orientation as the old. Refit the washer and nut, which should be finger tight, whilst you continue to hold the switch together. If you let go the chrome ring should hold the internals in place but I have found that often the tangs on the Bakelite body are broken, in which case the large internal spring will shoot bits of the switch all over your workbench. If you allow the lock/switch to rotate or fly apart, you will loose the orientation of the ignition contactor assembly. All is not lost however and you will now have the opportunity of cleaning the contacts followed by the intellectual exercise of working out the correct orientation of ALL the bits. Lucas excelled himself with this one as most parts have up to 4 possible positions, only one of which is correct, giving enough combinations to easily occupy a wet weekend. To disassemble as far as the ignition contacts you have to twist off the bezel taking care of the spring mentioned above. Straighten the 2 tangs poking through the back of the body and pull out the cast barrel lock holder. There is a smaller jack-in-a-box spring inside the barrel holder so be careful. The switch components must be orientated to align with the flat on the barrel lock and the lighting selector. Don't forget the dab of solder to stop the nut, which should only be finger tight, from working loose. Best of luck Cliff> Has anybody experience of changing the barrel lock in the ignition switch > of a 1946 TC which they are willing to share?

Many thanks to all who sent replies to my query regarding the barrel lock

Re: Ignition switch
I can vouch for Craig's workmanship on the switches; they look as they did
the day they were made.

Re: Ignition switch
Craig restored my instrument panel and switches. I would reccomend Craig
above all others. There are many people that we can do business with in our
pursuit of the "proper restoration". There are a few that are outstanding,
among them is: Craig Seabrook, Joe Curto, Lawrie Alexander, Peter at World
Wide Auto Parts,
Mike Goodman. I know there are others that I left out. These people supply
what we need to keep our T's running and looking good, and stand behind their
work. Some are list members. We should use their services whenever possible.
