Ammeter readings

Post by Charles_Shiplee@batesuk.com » Wed Mar 28, 2001 3:24 am

When I turn on the ignition, before I hit the starter, the needle swings into "- " as the fuel pump pressures up and then settles at a constant discharge even though the pump is not ticking . I assume that only the coil is drawing power. Is this correct ? or should I have no discharge with the ignition on? Charles: You have it right...all lights off, you will see a pulsing discharge as the fuel pump cycles up to pressure. When the pump stops you will usually see a small discharge showing the coil draw. However, if the engine happened to come to a stop with the points open, then you won't show any discharge till the pump recycles or you pull the starter and the points begin cycling the coil primary. God bless real ammeters. Regards, Larry
