Superchargers

Post by bobgthomas@earthlink.net » Sun Jan 28, 2001 10:52 pm

Hello everyone I was chatting with a friend about superchargers for the TC and the convesation turned to pricing. Does anyone have an opinion (what a question to put to this group!!) about what some could expect to pay for a supercharger setup?? In particular a Shorrock and also a Judson?? I know the new Moss ones list around $3200, with some discounts available. Any others worth considering?? Does any one know of any for sale?? Thanks for all your help. Bob TC EXU 7388

Bob try Tom Poole of this list he has a Judson for sale, you could try george folchi who is a rebuilder and supplier of judsons, I believe he has one available. While I have not seen a Moss unit I understand that they are excellent and are much better that the stuff they had a few years ago, the blower is a US made unit, I helped them configure the carb installation, perhaps the purchase of their unit will save you trouble down the line in the form of looking for missing or worn pieces. Walt if you look in the MG Workshop manual by W. E. Blower there is a section on T type superchargers. I have a Marshall Nordac on my TD and it mounts were the carbs would be, most of the ones I have seen mount this way, Judson mounts directly to the stock intake manifold, and is a centrifugal type as is a Shorrock and an Arnott, Italmeccanica made one and it too is a Rootes type like the Marshall, I found that you have to search for old ads and road tests from the 50's to get any info, but I think that there are a lot of blowers out there judging from the response I get regarding proper carburetor needles for them. I love the blower on my car while it did not turn it into a Chrysler Hemi it did add some nice flexiability to the engine. joe www.joecurtoinc.com

Walter, just type "Judson" into "Google" and you'll find a lot of info on this supercharger. They made lots of them for various cars and I believe they are going back into business. Their is a Judson email list at autox.team.net....Dogedoc@aol.com was writing a book on superchargers and used to hang on this list but switched to MMM MG's....Moss has a new very slick s/c for sale based on a modern unit. Cheers Terry

Walter: In Chapter 29 (p.143-147) of the book "Tuning and Maintenance of M.G.s" by Philip Smith, there are illustrations of the Shorrock (vane) and the Wade (Rootes) superchargers along with a brief discussion regarding installation and basic tuning. Bob Johnson

Walter If you interested in installing a supercharger, I just installed a new modern unit, sourced for me my Skip Kelsey. Previous to this I was running a Judson unit made for T cars. The new unit is a vast improvement in drivability and running stability. The Judson is updraft from the carb and has a long delivery throat to the supercharger body on the T series unit. This caused me significant icing trouble, as well as fuel dribble back out of the air cleaner after shutdown. This new rootes type unit is highly recommended by me at least. Terry: I recently sold one of the new "Moss" superchargers to Joe Potter in Oregon. He did a beautiful installation in his clipper blue TC. He did E-mail me some superb photos of the installation. He says that it is a hoot to drive. I will be scanning one of the pictures into my web page soon. I have two more of these complete units in stock. They are a complete kit, with carb. They are very well done. Unit is a US made "Magnacharger" unit. Moss did the engineering to fit it too TC/TDs. It is a well thought out kit. I am told that the blower was originally made for high speed motorcycles. It is a very understressed unit. It sorta resembles a Marshall unit. Skip: Any idea how much boost it produces? What kind of carb does it use? What's the price?
