thermo bob vs drilling hole in thermostat

Post by nakedwaterskier » Thu Feb 04, 2016 1:41 pm

a little flow or a little more flow...i haven't had to look at the stock thermostat ever...would  take a hair longer to warm up but keep the rush of cold water hitting a hot block

a little flow or a little more flow...i haven't had to look at the stock thermostat ever...would  take a hair longer to warm up but keep the rush of cold water FROM hitting a hot block on warmup...if you figured out the right size hole...many cars do this with a whole and or little 1 way valve in the thermostat

There is no rush of cold water into a hot block if you allow a little coolant solution to continuously flow?

The temperature differential between the hot block and the cold coolant solution would be reduced with the proper sized hole in the thermostat; especially in SoCal where I live...and where a Thermo Bob has much less utility.

The effect is different from the thermostat bypass systems of which the Thermobobs are examples. The purpose of a thermostat bypass system is to recirculate and mix coolant within the engine in order to achieve a more uniform engine operating temperature. Bleeding coolant through the radiator simply acts to cool the engine by continuing to circulate cold coolant into the lower cylinder. I put together some information and explanation regarding bypass systems in this folder which may be useful. Please let me know if anything is unclear, appears to be incorrect, etc. Any suggestions as to how to improve the information may help someone. I'm happy to answer questions regarding cooling systems. One point which surprises many experienced technicians is that of the pressure in the cooling system. Ask anyone what is the pressure in the cooling system and they will usually respond with the value of the radiator cap pressure. This is the pressure while the thermostat is open but when the thermostat is closed, the water pump is pushing coolant into the lower engine and this pressure is applied against the thermostat. 50 PSI is not unusual while some newer Fords are reported to achieve over 100 PSI with thermostat closed. That little hole in the thermostat moves a lot of coolant and may be more responsible for the inability of the KLR to warm up under cold conditions than many believe. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/pwrq95427ptenur/AABiCBU5uMtpnilgMLael0I-a?dl=0 Here's a piece I wrote on the effects of air bubbles in the coolant which might be of interest: https://www.dropbox.com/s/kbixfk4wfaozxjs/Effects%20of%20air%20in%20coolant.doc?dl=0
