help with mysterious oil leak?

Post by kevbennett@sbcglobal.net » Thu Oct 15, 2015 7:13 pm

Hi, KLR wizards. I'm hoping for some enlightenment regarding an oil leak. Shortly after leaving my driveway on my '95 KLR yesterday, the rear brake became unresponsive.  I returned to the house, and found oil all over the rear hub and swingarm.  The highest and most forward place I saw oil was on the exhaust, below the airbox and just behind the brake fluid reservoir for the rear brakes.  I can't tell how it is getting there, but there was a lot of smoke coming off the exhaust at that spot yesterday.  I removed the air filter and did not find any oil in there.  Today I degreased everything and watched while the bike idled in the driveway for several minutes.  No sign of any leaks. No smoking exhaust.  I took it for a brief spin around the block.  It started running roughly after I got up some speed. I returned home to find the same leakage pattern as before, with the same smoke coming from the same spot on the exhaust. I'm stumped and could sure use some help.  Any suggestions? Appreciatively, Kevin

help with mysterious oil leak?

Post by Fred Hink » Thu Oct 15, 2015 9:27 pm

Have you checked your oil level in the engine?  If your fuel does not get shut off at the petcock and you have a leaking float valve, the gas will flood the carburetor and leak past your rings filling up the crankcase with gas.  This excess gas and oil mix will get blown out the breather and end up in the air box.  Could this be what you are seeing?  It is not safe to ride your bike if this is the case.

Post by cycletip » Fri Oct 16, 2015 10:16 am

Had this exact type of thing happen which Fred describes on another bike.  My issue was the vacuum petcock which I've removed from all bikes that had them.  Was easy to ID by the oil sight glass and smell a fuel polluting the oil.  If you suspect it's this do not ride the bike until it's corrected!  Serious damage can occur.

Kevin,When was the last time you oiled your air filter?  What is the oil level in the sump sight glass when the bike is vertical? 2 places to check.  Where are you located? Buddy

help with mysterious oil leak?

Thanks so much for your words of wisdom!  Yes, Fred was exactly right.  I had just replaced a leaking petcock the previous day, and did not suspect that the issues were related.  I changed the oil this morning and the symptoms disappeared. However, no amount of degreaser or brake cleaner seems able to restore proper function to the formerly oil-covered rear brake, so I ordered a new set of pads from Fred.
I am so grateful for this forum, whose members have come through for me many times.  When people ask me what I like about my KLR, I always mention the "hidden feature:"  the incredible resource of this online community.

What has previously worked for me---plan A or B: cough. A: sometimes you can recover the 'soiled' brake pads by 'grinding' them on wet or dry sand paper (pads and sand paper sprayed with brake cleaner).Place the sandpaper over a sheet of glass or other flat surface (formica counter top) and grind in a figure 8 pattern.Spray the pads after several revolutions and repeat on a clean spot. A.1 and clean the disc again.... B. Clean the disc again and install the new pads from Fred.B.1 Ignore part A.shrug.m.

carbs, petcocks and things fuel related

Post by cycletip » Tue Oct 20, 2015 11:24 am

It's that time again where I'm up to my elbows in carbs and things fuel system related.  Got into a conversation yesterday with someone over gas and ethanol.  I'd adamantly insisted that in CA it's law the pumps must state if there's any ethanol added to the fuel.  The look on his face told me to check and sure enough I was WRONG.  Here's an interesting site showing many things ethanol fuel related Ethanol Labeling Laws - State by State Guide. Ethanol Labeling Laws - State by State Guide. State-by-State guide to ethanol labeling laws. Find out if your state informs you when they add ethanol alcohol to the gas supply sold to the public. View on www.fuel-testers.com Preview by Yahoo So thinking my purchasing habits were keeping me ethanol free was bunk!  To the point of all this - took the KLR carb, 4 from and ZRX and 2 from a Kaw W650 apart to clean and replace gaskets.  Oddly enough all these carbs almost identical.  Something I've done several times over the years mostly focusing on the pesky pilot jet.  Recently problems with vacuum fuel petcocks also became a serious problem on one of the bikes.  The vacuum seal failed causing fuel to completely flood the crank case as discussed recently in other postings.  So all of them were to be changed to manuals in attempts to avoid this major PITA.  Upon inspection all the float bowl gaskets seemed almost welded into the groove which required a pick to remove.  All were getting very hard and showed much deterioration.  That pilot jet hole is one small bugger.  Does anyone have a trick for something that can be run through it?  Tried everything from an ultra thin sewing needle to a 000 welding tip cleaner with no luck.  Ended up using carb cleaner and air pressure.  At first had issues getting them out but thinking it through grounded down a larger screwdriver so it would fit inside the pilot jet casting hole proved time well spent.  Ya really need a good purchase on that jet to avoid messing it up!  Over time they become very stubborn!  Don't believe ethanol has anything to do with the clogging of this jet.  More of a gum and varnish thing IMO.  Moral of all this proved to me, that any place where the fuel tends to sit and is in regular contact with the rubber is a potential problem with regards to the ethanol.  Don't over look the petcock!  fuel lines and vacuum diaphragms seemed to be fine.  Think I'm going to give Sta-Bil ethanol fuel treatment a try this time around for shits and giggles to see if it makes any difference?  At the very least it should help prevent any rust from occurring in the fuel tank. The KLR is all ready to get dirty.  Can hardly wait to go riding! Monty

I just ordered a replacement manual petcock from Eagle Mike, rather than wait for this to happen to my '06. Thanks for the warning. Paul From: "Martin Earl mjearl4@...
