What is the difference between a resistor spark plug and a non- resistor. I see in my new manual USA bikes call for non-resistor and other countries call for resistor. Whick is best? Does it hurt to run an R in the USA bikes? Barry A-7

I run the high dollar DPR8EVX-9 Plug, The ole single seems to be a lot harder on the sparkplug, I run the gap at 35, I pulled the plug out with about 3000 miles on it and was surprised to see the ware on it, My other in line 4s are not so hard on there plugs.... Mike

I changed mine yearly just as a maintenance item. Not that it needed it, but one spark plug once a year is low maintenance to me. FWIW Karl

The KLR spark plug needs an 18mm socket (99% sure), which doesn't correspond to the standard 5/8 and 13/16 sizes. Does anyone think it is necessary to replace my spark plug? I have an A13 with 12000 miles on it. It always starts and runs fine. I am form the school of thought: If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Stock plug and Stock battery. Biker Mike

The only way you can tell is to pull it and look at the condition of the electrode. It should look dry and clean. If it looks powdery white or soiled black then you should replace it and re-adjust the carb.

Short trips, richer than stock carb settings, and forgetting to take off the choke will contribute to plug fouling. If you are worried about it, change it, but do it when you have the tank off so you can get the area around the plug clean. My first spark plug looked fine when changed at 22,000 miles. The second plug has 46,000 on it now, still running fine. Stock carb setup. Allan A14
