rear brake squeal revisited

Post by imfreelandian » Sun Jul 19, 2015 6:53 pm

A few days ago, I posted asking for, and receiving, advice about curing a rear brake squeal on an '04. The pads don't have very much wear, they were replaced 1500 miles ago. The squeal started less than 200 miles ago. I cured the squeal by blowing out all dust, cleaning the pads and disc with brake cleaner, sanding the pads, and putting NAPA "Disc Brake Quiet" on the backs of the pads. (I considered pad shims, but the NAPA goo supposedly does the same thing). This worked really well... for about 90 miles. The squeal is back, now what? Thanks in advance, Gerry

Thanks in advance, Gerry <><><><><><><> <><><><><><><>   Gerry,   Try lubing the caliper mount pins with CALIPER grease.  These are not the pins the brake pads mount to but the pins the caliper mounts too.  Only use caliper grease which you can buy in a small packet at any decent auto parts store.  If they try to tell you to use any other grease mark them on your don't listen too list.   Caliper mount pins are one of the most under serviced items on a KLR and many other vehicles.  If the caliper can't slide smoothly on the mount you can get chatter or squealing along with uneven brake pad wear.   Best, Jeff Saline The Beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota 75 R90/6, 03 KLR650 . . . . . .   . ____________________________________________________________ Old School Yearbook Pics View Class Yearbooks Online Free.
