Ugh, not Facebook! Curse you Zuckerburg. :-)  I guess ill have to check that page out... I'm still lurking out here.  I'm not as far north as some of you guys so I have been getting in some daily commutes through the winter. I commuted on the KLR today as we started at 50 and will reach 75 degrees. If the afternoon ride home looks good, I'll ride if its at least 38 degrees or so with a balaclava on my head and with glove liners.. My commute is only ten miles... I rode about 20 miles Sunday in the country on alternating gravel and blacktop. FYI, my elephant top case and flat panel slide mount has worked out very well for me. :-) I had my closest call yet this AM when a guy smoking a cigarette driving an old Cherokee started to turn left in front of me AND the car next to me when our lights all turned green. I had only made it into second gear and had to brake heavily before he realized the error of his ways, braked and got back on his side of the road. Fortunately everyone else seemed to be paying attention  and I didn't get hit from behind.  Paul Sent from my iPhone

Nah, not on Facebook. I'll sign the FB terms and conditions a day or two after hell freezes over. Some of us are still here but we are spending the time riding or at least planning rides. I'm also doing a fair amount of wrenching lately, mostly on my old Hondas. I'm recently back from Death Valley National Park, rode a week there with a group of guys from eastern Washington. Good riding, good weather, good company. Had one instant-deflation front flat at high speed offroad.now I can at least imagine what rodeo bull riders go through.probably the most intense 7 or so seconds of my life. Saved it though and didn't even soil my riding shorts. :). Very strange coincidence: flat happened just a few feet from one of the photo locations from my Easy Rider movies scenes ride. For students of the movie, the scene is where Wyatt throws his watch away and they begin their trip to Mardi Gras. That scene was filmed in DVNP near the ghost town of Ballarat and the road that Billy and Wyatt are on when the intro credits conclude (Wingate Road) is where I had the flat. Never found the cause of the flat but the there were two parallel slits through the sidewall of the tire and tube. Each slit was about a 1/16 of an inch long and the two slits were about a 1/4 inch apart. I suspect an industrial staple (like something used to hold a seat cover on a seat pan) or similar but my riding buddies wanted me to check for a set of rattlesnake fangs :). Patched the tube and rode another two days on the iffy sidewall but was sure happy to get a new tire spooned on. Tires were Pirelli MT-21s, I don't think the stiffer sidewall of a Dunlop D606 sidewall would have been punctured like that. Next up is a long weekend ride, the Crooked River Campout on the 26th-29th of March. There is a thread on it here: http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1026773. This ride is in central Oregon. I'm also trying to get a few folks together to do a offroad ride *across* the state of Washington, roughly west to east. This route is NOT the north-south route called the Washington Backcountry Discover Route but rather a route stitched together recently called the Northwest Discovery Route. I've ridden most of it in bits and pieces over the years but never attempted it as a single ride. Details on that ride here: http://sirby.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/Campouts-and-Rides/Northwest-Passage-Ri des-201220/Northwest-Passage-Ride-2012/ I also want to do Moab this year, just after Easter. Maybe a week in Moab and a weekend to get there and another weekend to get back? Let's get a group together from this site for this ride! I'd also like to get up to Bella Coola, BC. I'm thinking about riding all the way there from Seattle and taking the BC Ferry from Bella Coola to Port Hardy on Vancouver Island and come back to Seattle via the island. Maybe 2 week to and from Seattle for this trip. I'm also planning a summer trip across Canada to the maritime provinces but that will be a 98% pavement ride. Probably a month on the road for that one. John, The flat you had is typically called a "snake bite", because it looks like a snake might have bitten the sidewall. This type of flat is caused by hitting something hard enough to collapse the side wall pinching the tube between the tire and the rim. Patching a side wall is never a good idea but at least it got you out of a bad situation. Snake bite flats can be caused by running too low air pressure or hitting an object too fast or it is too large. Thicker tubes, running more air pressure (up to a point), and/or driving slower all helps save you from a pinch flat. The group I moderate has well over 5,200 members and grows constantly. The downside I see is that it doesn't appear that there is any means to search, flag or archive so the same questions come up, sometimes several at the same time. KLR650 Owners (https://www.facebook.com/groups/klrmoto/) seems a very decent group with some good people. I bailed from two others because there were rude people but this one is what someone from here would expect in terms of decorum, IME.   It would be too bad to see the traditional groups fade away but that looks likely to happen. One problem I see with FB is that people will become tired of answering the same question, eventually.
