frozen rear axle - update- got it out!

Post by Eddie » Tue Mar 24, 2015 2:12 pm

Drilling out any bolt of that magnitude would be tops on my mechanical "Hope to never..." list. I was very glad I greased the axles and the rear suspension parts early on. (2009 KLR) A tub of Bel-Ray waterproof grease is cheap compared to the nightmare potential. =) -eddie PS: Warning to those who don't change your own tires and grease the axles > Pull the axles and grease 'em before it's too late! Heck, I've had to grease brand new axles on many bikes.

That's number infinity on the "not fun" list.

With 154k on the odo, at 70 mph, the little 650 motor went south. Being as it is kinda old, I will look to the group for advise. I am certain it is worth more parted out than fixed. New handlebar, stainless steel brake lines, fork brace, Givi side and top bags, not a scratch in the tank or colors - except where the exhaust maybe melted the fender a little. I got a new front and almost new rear along with all the suspense being done. Or .... I find a used 650 and put it in.  I looked in AZ ... no good 650 motors to be found and the one in the bike goes .... bang ... bang .... bang ... when you hit the starter. Clueless in Phoenix ... Well not really clueless, just looking for input. PauL ( yes the "L" is capital)

Ya do maintenance like I did, easy 150k. They are durable bikes.

as my daddy would say, 'at that many miles, it didn't owe you any money'Your question is the one we should ask every time we do a major repair. Repair, or sell the parts: 1. Before you do a repair, count all the cost you put into the bike, and then ask yourself, (knowing that an engine cost = $600, this is the price of a 2001, 3500 mile engine sitting in NC))"Would I buy this bike for $600? A local bike (mine) became an oil burner...did a 685 kit, carb rebuild, and a few other items needing repair ~$600. I felt the repair would essentially buy back my 1998, 56K mile back for $600. 2. Then look to see what NADA value is at this present time for a 1996 KLR650; low retail $770; avg retail $1015. Now consider a KLR with 150K miles on the clock...of course, it only indicates 50K...cough.Pause for moment,Let us see a show of hands that would buy a KLR with 150K miles on it... I remember a time I would shy away from one with 6K on it!...then bought one with 20K miles/4 owners...which probably proved to be why it needed a cylinder early in its life; yet I digress. anyway,Then put on your insurance hat: knowing for certain, if it is destroyed in an accident, (most likely) the maximum value you will be reimbursed is NADA value, and lucky if you see that. If the insurance man figures in the mileage, the value will not likely even approach low retail. the sell it: 3. With fairly new tires, you might get as much as $500 for a set of wheels; exceeding the replacement value of your bike. shrug.Or, you might get as little as $80 a wheel and tire. AMHIK. I recently got almost new D606 tires, wheels, disc, sprocket/carrier for $80each. shrug. You have the frame, carb, and head, perhaps the forks, axles, and switches.IMO, You have the potential to bring about $1K in parts...to the right person(s) even more. One last consideration...does it need anything else? that is going to cost money to get it up to snuff?m1.

In most instances:Mileage on your bike is a mutually exclusive event to the OP.I do understand the 'intent' of your question.Noting, in the forum conversation over the past 11 years, I had come to expect ~60K miles to be pretty normal. Some report some high numbers. shrug. Some report significant failures much earlier...I suspect right wrist motion and lack of maintenance has something to do with this. My bike gave me 56K miles before it needed a cylinder upgrade. This happens earlier for some, later for others. My particular machine came to me with 20K on the odo and I was the 4th owner....I am satisfied the cylinder repair was 'goldilocks' = about right. I offer this insight from a DRZ400 forum why some things don't last.I am answering a question IRT how high you can run the engine (no tac on the DRZ400S): Quote: Originally Posted by revmaaatin There is a neat gadget you can add to the bike that reads RPMs. An individual who post here routinely exhibited it within the past two years. It is a wire that wraps around the coil wire and leads to a ~1x2 readout. That said, a good rule of thumb is never run an engine steady-state at more than 75% of red line for extended periods. Case in point, I rode a KLR250 1750 miles in 5 days at 75% of redline. The oil level never moved. If I get on a machine without a tac/redline, I seat of the pants estimate 75% of full throttle for extended periods. If the bike seizes, you will know, that you were using to much throttle. shrug. The 'internet' expert replied: (name deliberately deleted) respect your opinion but I've proved it wrong a number of times. I've done several 3-4000 mi trips on SL100 hondas, on 2 lane and interstate, rev'd the shit out them for hours, all day, over the rockies. thats just a few... what about road racers? guessing you never raced? if I bike seizes it can be other things as well, heat, jetting, oil, coolant issue, etc.. sure sometimes, some conditions or engines its not good to rev the guts out but as a general rule most modern bikes I don't agree. UnsnipI didn't bother to reply. One last observation, buy a used bike from a guy like Paul Bober and not the 'internet-expert' I have quoted above. m.

Thank you for the insight. I see you have looked at it from both sides , as I have. No it needs nothing else, I stayed on top of maintenance and repairs. The mileage is correct .. 154k on the odo. On last thing .. I work for an insurance company that insures among other things, motorcycles. They insure mine and have for 16 years since I bought the used bike with 2k miles on it. I know the book value, yet I keep comp and collision on it. Go figure.
