cold engine starts

Is does sound like a fuel delivery problem:Q. Are you running the carb complexly dry each time you shut off the bike? They can be cantankerous =takes longer to start, if you are one that allows the bike to use all the fuel in the fuel bowl during shutdown. A couple of things to check...Q. Is the enricher cable actually hooked up to the carb?In a very very quiet place, push the enricher lever and see if you can hear the brass plunger 'travel' at the carb.It is possible if someone worked on the carb, it is not hooked up or the cable is way out of adjustment.Cable adjustment is at the L. thumb lever Q. What is the condition of the air cleaner?Self explanatory, make sure it is properly serviced. A slow cranking battery will not excite the 'stuff' enough to give you a good spark...so, Q. What is your battery voltage after the bike has been setting for a day? What is the battery voltage when you crank the bike after it has been setting for a day. How:Place the leads on the battery,\read the voltagecrank the bikevoltage should not go below 10v while cranking (other than a momentary drop below 10)If it drops down into the 9 or 8v range, it might still crank the bike but is to slow to cause it to excite the spark. Validate the vacuum pet cock is working correctly:Completely remove the carb drain screw on the right side of the fuel bowl;crank the bike and see if you get fuel surging out of the fuel bowl. and finally, (back to the initial premise = fuel delivery system)It sounds like your starting circuit may be a little gummed up.Try running 6 oz. of SeaFoam in the fuel = 1oz/gal and then let is set overnight after the fuel has ran in the carb for several moments. If that does not work, you are probably going to need to do some carb cleaner in the start circuits of the carb. The Clymers has a pretty good picture and explanation of where to squirt the cleaner.m1.

Its hard to crank when it is cold. once it cranks and warms up it cranks very easy. I also noticed a little pop occasional when giving it gas or letting up. Bike has 4300 miles. It did sit up for quite some time and the carb. was supposed to be cleaned up. This is the way it was when I got the bike. It doesn't seem to matter what yo do with the choke, Harry
