If you want top of the line sprockets and chain go with Sunstar sprockets and DiD X-ring chain. If you want to try a little cheaper, go with JT or PBI sprockets and a DiD or RK O-ring chain. I would stay away from Sprocket Specialists sprockets unless you are needing a "special" sprocket for some vintage bike.
Your chain and sprockets are the life line to your bike. Using cheaper drive train components or not maintaining what you have, can lead to a short unhappy life.

The only larger rear sprockets to speak of are made from aluminum and wear out much faster than steel sprockets. The stock rear sprocket has 43 teeth. I have found a 44T rear steel sprocket but I figure "what is the point?"
I like using larger diameter sprockets since the tighter you have to bend your chain around a sprocket, the more wear you will have.
So since you don't have that many options for gearing, I would suggest like Arne mentioned to drop your gearing with the 14T front sprocket.

KLRers,
A little while back, I read where someone was having a problem with the radiator shrouds rubbing the paint on the gas tank. I found a solution that came about through dismay. I had dropped my EH14 (Canadian) a couple of weeks back and had to order the small screen that protects(?) the radiator. I was able to replace it today and remembered the message about the shroud as I was replacing mine. The radiator screens have some small u-channel rubber pieces to prevent the screen from rubbing. I pulled my trashed screen out and retrieved the rubber pieces off of it. I then placed them on both shrouds at the upper mounting screw. Problem solved and I was able to use "Genuine Kawasaki" parts in the process. I do not recommend that anyone "trash" their existing screen in order to make this fix, but, if one should come across a screen that has been trashed....

Eric,
That is a false neutral and unfortunately an inherent design weakness in the KLR. Read the KLR review in Motorcycle Online. They talk about it. Good luck.

I'm sorry, but to the Bridgestone boycott, I've got to say "Give me a break."
There are two sides to every story. Land use restrictions do concern me, but I've lived in Washington and Oregon for the past ten years. You don't have to look too far in any dirrection to find vast areas where the land has been raped, clear cut like a bad crew cut for as many miles as the eye can see. Preserving a little land here and there isn't the worst thing that ever happened, particularly when it was private land to begin with.
Too much of this approach is just a hidden stab at the Clinton/Gore administration. If you want to hate them, hate away, but don't do it here. It isn't appropriate for this news group.
That's all I'll say, because it clogs up the list. I'd had enough, so I picked this one to respond to. Besides, Bridgestone makes the best car tires .

Message: 11 Date: Sat, 15 Apr 2000 12:12:01 EDT From: GFV56@aol.com Subject: One missing bolt.... and bad luck
So I finally get some nice weather to do some off road riding here in upstate NY. Too bad the bolts that keep the handlebars attached to the bike had loosened after only 450 miles. It is no fun having the bars rotate forward when you are approaching a washed-out stream bed. Oooopppsss! Down I go ! Man this thing is heavy ! After the spill, one of the bolts (4 total) was so loose that it had fallen out - cap and all ! I had to break out the trusty Kawi tool kit and tighten the remaining 3 bolts just to get back to the pavement. The bike took the spill fairly well, only a few scratches to the rear side panel and hand guard. Things got worse last night while riding with a few four wheelers on some abandoned train tracks. I lost sight of the wheelers and missed a turn in the tracks - WHAM ! - Forty mph into a fence and heavy brush. So, as I am flying over the handlebars and thirty feet into a corn field, I'm thinking that something must have gotten damaged this time (worry more about the bike than myself!). To my surprise, nothing but a few more scratches and alot of brush sticking out all over the place !
ouch Unfortunately, the bike began to run very poorly a short time after this. Almost like it was starving for gas. It would no longer idle and gas was pouring out of the overflow tube at the bottom of the bike when it was running (poorly). Sh%t ! Maybe a stuck float in the carb ? I was too tired after pushing it back to civilization to bother with it, so I dropped it off at the dealer this morning and expressed my anger with the handlebar incident. Everything is being covered under the warranty and I should be riding again in a few days. No major personal injuries, just a few bruises here and there.

Hi, Some time back, the list helped someone with a similar problem discover that the shift lever was hitting the skid plate ( or something ) at the lower end of its travel, causing missed down shifts. Something to check, anyway. I don't recall having any trouble downshifting on my A14. I miss upshifts, though. Mostly bad technique, I guess. I'm just a newbie, but I second the Professor's tip to preload the shifter before hitting the clutch. It really works well for me. Dave Leslie A14 .833K Richmond, VA

Actually, there is a forum that was created specifically to discuss NKLR, political issues such as this. You can find it here. http://www.onelist.com/community/USA_MC_politics
And also folks... for the digesters sake - just a friendly reminder to trim our messages. It does a lot for prolonging the life of the mouse. =^)

Glad you're O.K. Greg. If you want to "unpersonalize" her again... Dualstar has lots of body parts for Y2K KLR's at very good prices.

I have no use for companys that act irresponsibily. I will never buy another set of Bridgestone/Firestone tires for any of my vehicles again. Besides, their are better tires on the market anyway. I dont want to help finance these motorized vehicle lockouts.

Well I have lived in Ohio all of my life, which is a hell of a lot closer to Tennessee than Oregon, and I do have to look very far in any direction to find someplace you can still ride off road. And as far as hating the Clinton Gore administration, a donation of this private land would be a lot easier to take if federal lands were not currently being closed in the manner they are.

If i am reading your post right, and everything is set right float hight and all, It seems the KLR may need a bigger pilot jet, I had a SP 600 back in 1985 XL 600 and a XT 600 were all pretty close in a drad race, UNTIL i installed a bigger pilot jet, I would pull um in the 1st 4 gears and thay just never could close the gap..

There is one MAJOR difference. I just checked my policy and I have $300,000 (CDN) coverage here. I don't even want to think how fast $15,000 would be used up in case of accident or lawsuit.>Bodily Injury $15,000 each person/$30,000 each accident >Property Damage 10,000 each accident $54 >Uninsured/Underinsured $15,000/$30,000 $73
$100 deductable. A $500 deductable only made only a token reduction in premium here.>Comprehensive $250 deductible $39
$300 deductable. I'm in Ontario as well and I pay upper $600's for a full year of coverage, and that's considered pretty good. Keep in mind when you go with low liability limits such as 15,30,15, an
insurance company will always settle an injury claim. This works against you
because now they are essentially admitting fault on your behalf. They pay the
limits of your policy and you will be left holding the bag for the rest of the
claim. If you have higher limits, you not only stand a better chance that the
insurance company will put up a fight for you, you probably will get legal
representation, in addition to possibly being able to pay the obligation.

Funny how it depends on where you live, after seeing some of the low prices people are paying with GMAC I asked for a quote on my 2 bikes, the quotes me on 50/100 liability, 25K property damage and collision and theft for $617--(for 6 months!) I presently have 100/300 liablility and 50k PD with coll and theft with Progressive and I pay $461 (FOR A WHOLE YEAR!)
I used to be in the biz so I know that there are a whole lot of variables involved, but wow.

That's nothing. Up here in the great white north of Canada, you do
NOT want to know what the GS1150 is going to cost me per year, with
full coverage. It will bring a tear to your eye.

INSURANCE NIGHTMARE!!!!!
I was 19 years old, had totaled a couple of cars (1 thanks to friend) and
had 2 speeding tickets. The year
was 1986, I had just Echo Tango Suitcased out of the Army and I had to have
the first Ninja 1000 available.
I paid cash for the bike (thank God!, $5K) and then went looking for
insurance. The only company at the
time that would touch me was Progressive - Now hold on to your depends or
rubber underwear... I had
already driven off the lot when I got my quote:
Full coverage for 1 year $9200.00 NO, THIS IS NOT A TYPO!
After picking myself up off of the floor I was asked when I would turn 20
because then it would drop to a
measley $5400.00 a year. After going to the mens room and trashing my
drawers I went back and decided
liability insurance was all I needed, $1270.00 a year......
Now on to better times. I will be the proud owner of a 01 KLR this Friday.
Oh Yeah! I almost forgot
Insurance premium $212.00 a year.
Scott
Pre KLR owner

I have a question regarding insurance. My girlfriend and I haven't
done alot of dirt riding in the past, but have taken quite an
interest in it recently. She has a Yamaha TTR-125 dirt bike. As of
tomorrow, I will be unemployed and she will no longer have medical
coverage. The question is, should I start an insurance policy with
medical coverage for her when she's riding out on the trails? I've
heard some pretty bad horror stories of what has happened to people
out on the trails. She's not an extreme rider. Neither one of us are,
but one of my concerns is another motorist barreling down the trails
slamming in to one of us. I'm covered under a full policy since I
ride my KLR mostly on the street. I guess I'd like to see her be too.
Any advice on the matter or suggestions would be most appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike

One major reason I didn't ride for almost 15yrs was because I didn't
have any medical coverage during that period and couldn't afford to
get any. Call me a wimp, but it cost about six grand in the E.R. for
some basic road-rash cleanup and a few stitches. I couldn't have
afforded that without medical coverage that I had at the time. I
wouldn't want to think about carrying catastrophic injury bills....it
could happen.
