gps for on and off-road

I'm planning a trip from Arkansas to Colorado on my KLR 650.  I'm wanting to ride back roads in the forest, like maybe Silverton area, or Gunnison/Crested Butte/Aspin area.   Thus, I need more than just a GPS that works well on the highway.  I need one that will be helpful off-road as well. I need one that is easy to see, even in sunlight, and easy to use.  Any suggestions?
Also, anyone planning on being in one of these areas in the next couple of weeks?  Maybe we could meet up and do some riding/camping.

A lot of the guys here in mich. with GLDSMC (GL = Great lakes) use a Garmin 60-CSX  (stronger external antenna) Fits in coat pocket & can use AA batteries when walking etc. Comes with just basic highways, AND Mini sd card slot, that can have more City & Topo maps installed. ($$) Put into your PC and then you pick the area (states) etc you are going to ride. I use a simple Garmin Nuvi on Paved roads FREEWAYS etc.. (ziplock baggy as a rain coat when needed. As a back up, when Off road (& slower) OR OFF BIKE, I carry the 60CSX.  PLEASE! zoom in&out before trusting ANY route a GPS shows you. I don't know how many times a gps (5-6 different ones) has show WAY the wrong route. (When driving with John B. (in truck) 2 times it had us get off the freeway go threw town then get back on. gps for on and off-road

I used that CX-series of GPS until I couldn t see it without glasses then switched to the (larger) Garmin Montana series. I have Garmin Rugged Mounts on each of the bikes so moving the GPS between them takes just seconds. I have an extra rugged mount hooked up to a cigarette lighter plug and suction cup Ram mount so I can use the Montana in rental cars too.

 

Garmin licenses their maps on a per *[b]device* (GPS) [/b]basis. So if you have one Montana you only need one license to their maps even though you might install their maps onto a couple of personal computers. Also worth noting that Garmin s website is the worst place to buy Garmin maps, better to buy them from an online reseller (e.g GPS City or Amazon) and best to buy a lifetime maps subscription rather than just one upgrade. That said, be aware that the lifetime is the lifetime of the GPS as Garmin chooses to define it. So you while might live to be as old as Methuselah, as soon as Garmin decides your GPS has reached end of support your lifetime subscription ends.

gps for on and off-road

When I replied I should have said what I use.  I have a 76CSX.  It is a great unit.  I have used it all over Arkansas, Texas and New Mexico.  I am looking to get the Montana or Monterra because of the bigger screen.  That is the same reason I did not mention the Garmin 60 (It is a very good GPS).  Thanks.  I ordered the Montana Bike Bundle.  Adventure Riders get $50.oo off at GPS City even though they already had the best price. I did not know about the zoom in trick to verify accuracy. Been lied to a few times by GPS.  I guess you are saying the "zoom" is a truth test.  :-)

My 1 BIG BITCH, about Garmin (besides all the mistakes, sometimes 300++ miles off) You BUY the Maps, and if you buy a new Garmin for what ever reason (lost stolen, ran over with rear tire, etc) You have to BUY NEW MAPS AGAIN. Good thing Record players, Cassette decks, CD, DVD, MP-3 players etc. Do NOT make you REPAY for the same music when you upgrade the music PLAYERS. Zoom way out slowly and see if the route looks strange. TRUE examples.1. Sw of Minneapolis, heading 57 mies SW.The  maps said go BACK NE AND GO AROUND Minneapolis 1st. 2. I knew where to go, 7 miles west to the Mississippi River then 11 miles N.    (Maps said head S. then W. Then N. THEN E. BACK TO THE EAST SIDE OF THE RIVER. 362+- miles. the route looked like McDonalds giant Arches. Threw 2 other states. Call garmin and they said, my maps are OUT DATED, 6 months.Did they just build all those freeways and rds in the last 6 months? BOTTOM LINE TRIPLE CHECK, AND ZOOM OUT & IN, Sometimes what looks "out of the way" is going around a "something" the rd does not go threw. gps for on and off-road

I have a spot by my work at an intersection for a major highway, HWY78. Sitting at a traffic light needing to go left, which you can turn either way, left or right and the Garmin tells you to turn right, go mile, make a u-turn when able and takes you right past the light you started at. I ve contacted Garmin several times over the last 9 years and it s still not corrected. I ve even sent them the route maps. BOTTOM LINE TRIPLE CHECK, AND ZOOM OUT & IN, Sometimes what looks "out of the way" is going around a "something" the rd does not go threw. (then sometimes it does)

My big gripe with Garmin is that after a year or so you start getting messages on the GPS that your maps may be out if date, and right after that huge holes start appearing in your maps. Now, those maps were just fine a few months ago, what caused them to develop holes? It worked, though, the price of a new, bigger, GPS was only $5 more than a new mapset so I got one.
