Help! I'm in Stewart, BC/Hyder, AK and have a bad oil leak that developed suddenly in my 98 KLR. Thought it might be the crankcase ventilation, but not sure. Can't see any leak when sitting still, even when revving. But on-the-go, it blows oil out of somewhere. A lot. Seems to be somewhere from the rear of the lower half of the motor (crank case). Not the primary shaft seal. Any ideas? Stewart is really small. Has a sort of gas station so I can buy oil but can't carry enough to make it 3 hours over the mountains to the next town of any size. Hotel has very iffy wifi. Replies would be welcome to my email which might load easier than a "group.". Will check later today (Sunday). And tomorrow's a civic holiday in Canada. :-(   Thanks in advance. John deikis@...

John deikis@... <><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><>   John,   The rear lower half of the motor might be the crankcase breather leaking.  When RevMaaatin and I did his 685 install last winter the nipple for the hose going to the airbox was rattling around loose.  He cleaned the area and nipple well and then used JB KWIK to put it back in place.  As far as I know it is still working well.   It doesn't take much oil to make a huge mess.  Since it only seems to happen when moving maybe the airstream is pulling it out of somewhere.   Probably the best thing you can do is clean the area as best you can and then take a short test ride.  After only one mile stop and inspect.  If you can't see the leak ride another mile and stop and inspect.  Still can't see it ride two miles and then stop and inspect.  Continue until you find the leak.  Then you'll know what the problem is and can figure out how to best address it in your situation.   You'll probably need a good flashlight, rags and removal of side panels or covers so you can get a good view.  Probably better to make the full effort to find it the first time rather than drag it out doing a bit better when the first or second go doesn't work well.   You can use a bit of fuel on a rag to help cut the oil and clean the engine.  If you can get it clean you can spray foot powder or deodorant on the area and that will often highlight the leak when it starts.   Maybe also take a good look on the top of the head.  If the head cover is loose or lost a bolt oil could come from there and might move down.   I'd probably also take a good look at the rear shock to make sure it hasn't lost a seal.  Additionally I'd probably look at the countershaft seal and front sprocket area.   Good luck, Jeff Saline The Beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota 75 R90/6, 03 KLR650 . . . . .     ____________________________________________________________ The #1 Worst Carb Ever? Click to Learn #1 Carb that Kills Your Blood Sugar (Don't Eat This!) Spent the day on it...in a camp ground. Not the countershaft or anything obvious. The oil is coming from the air box drain tubes. Seems to be pressurized crankcase issue. No blue smoke, no apparent change in start up manners or acceleration. Local guy thought it could be ineffective cooling due to crap in between the radiator fins. Will try to comb the fins in the morning and wash out the spaces in between. Have pulled he clutch cover and cleaned the screen and changed the oil filter...not sure why. Found out I can rent a pick up to Terrace, BC...but then I'd be in Terrace, BC and I need to make Calgary by the 6th...which is soon. What would cause crankcase high pressure? Figured maybe a broken ring, but it blows no blue smoke and performance is about as normal as I can tell. Ideas or comments to my email at deikis@.... Thanks, guys. John
