<><><><><><><> <><><><><><><> Mark, If you take a look at the link (above) from Fred in the first diagram you'll see it shows the adjustment screw. The mod is replacing that screw with a piece of round stock with a threaded hole in the end. If I recall correctly the part is 1 1/4" long and 1/4" round stock. I used brass for the ones I made. I knurled one end for better grip. I think, but don't remember for sure, the threads are 8-32. When I first did the mod I made a few of them for friends that were installing the Vista Cruise. I contacted the maker of Vista Cruise and they asked for one for evaluation. They liked it but for corporate reasons decided not to add it to the product. Best,

I made the screws I needed for mine with a drill and a dremel. It tok a few minutes. I do not know if the pre 08 model KLRs have the same throttle assembly.

if you could have only one modification..?
If you want a worthy project--How about a plug and play front end replacement using the the KLX250 or 300 for a donor bike. A Black Hills KLR rider recently did this 'type' of mod-- replaced the KLR frontend with a WR450 or WR250 inverted forks; fell into a purchase that was a killer deal which made it feasible. shrug.
I am just back in from riding my KLX250 84 miles, a lot of that being technical ATV trails with broken rock and boulders. It was a joyful, handful to have a working suspension. Especially a handful at 6-6500 ft of altitude.
I think it could be ridden with a KLR650 if it had decent front forks but ridden with great difficulty in the OEM configuration. Certainly beyond my skill sets via the current configuration of a farkled KLR650; though I rode in via the KLX250, 2x. in the past 7 days...enough to get the T-shirt. So I would add to the discussion of 'one thing'. After foot-pegs, I want real forks.
Yeah, Randy/Sniper/.308 is right; real suspension would be nice; even if I initially was tempted to disagree. cough. Side step to cloud the water-- (wink) I have to 'question' his choice of caliber when something like a .338 Lapua is available. (not that I own one) shrug.and so it goes.

The KLR Rant thread was inspired and I will go back to find the OP as am indebted. I like the informed back and forth here without any of the intolerance and name calling found in most other groups when opinions conflict. It is both instructive and interesting to interact with the members of this group. For those of us who are interested in the truth, testing ideas in cooperation with those one respects and trusts is the best means.

Here are a couple of pictures that I posted somewhere about ten years ago and has been lost in the ether.

Just a little L shaped piece of metal with a hole in it to mount under an existing throttle housing screw.
