starter woes? - help please..............

Post by eddiebmauri » Mon Oct 21, 2013 9:07 pm

OK, I need to start trouble shooting my KLR - here are the symptoms,,,,,,, "when I press the starter....... sometimes nothing happens, sometimes I hear a "click" noise that sounds like it might coming from under the tank."  It will start then run fine.  Anyone have a guess on what this might be?
And, (unrelated to the above) the speedometer needle seems to work OK, but sometimes I notice it drop a few MPH then go back up.. I suspect this is a speedometer problem as "la poderosa" runs fine.  Speedometer cable starting to fail?  Lube the cable.... any guesses?

Eddie <><><><><><><> <><><><><><><>   Eddie,   My first guess will be loose battery cable connection(s) or a discharged battery.  Second guess will be a poor connection at the starter circuit relay or starter solenoid.  On a Gen I KLR they are both located under the black plastic cover above the left footpeg.  On Gen II KLRs the starter solenoid is under the black plastic cover above the left footpeg.  The starter circuit relay is located under the fairing near the speedometer.   If you need further help in this area let us know the year of the bike as the systems are different between the Gen I and Gen II models.   For the speedo it could need lube or it might be a cable.  But I'll guess it is the speedo instrument that needs cleaning/lube.  I use sewing machine oil or 3 in 1 oil when I lube them.  Just a drop is usually all it takes.  More just makes a mess.   Best, Jeff Saline The Beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota 75 R90/6, 03 KLR650 . . . .   ____________________________________________________________ 30-second trick for a flat belly This daily 30-second trick BOOSTS your body's #1 fat-burning hormone TheFatBurningHormone.com

starter woes? - help please..............

Post by Ronald Criswell » Tue Oct 22, 2013 4:54 pm

I was having problems starting on my '99 recently and got so bad I was afraid I would be stranded somewhere. Me and a friend diasbled the sidestand safety switch and the clutch release safety switch. Didn't help. Then I replaced the starter button assembly. Bingo! Problem solved. The old one was pretty dirty. Some suggested try and clean it....but I like new with start buttons. Since doing that, my nuetral green light which was staying on all the time even in gear after replacing that little sender thing by the countershaft sprocket.....it is working correctly now. Sometimes I think installing a kick start lever like a friend did on his would be a good idea. You can push start these bikes but it isn't that easy if you don't have it on a hill. Criswell
