new klr rider

Post by Chris » Tue Sep 18, 2001 9:38 am

Hello Folks, I just bought a '98 KLR650 with 4900 road miles on it. I'll be riding it home on Wednesday and going out one evening this week to ride the Brush Mt fire road near Blacksburg, Virginia. My other ride is a Honda '00 ST1100, which will be one year old tomorrow and has 19,600 miles on it, mostly long distance trips. My plans for the KLR include exploring all those fire roads and jeep trails here in Appalachia that my ST doesn't really like. Hope to run into some ya'll out there somewhere. Ride safe, Chris Hall, cdhall@v... STOC 1547 '00 ST1100A '98 KLR650 Blacksburg, Virginia "They told me I was gonna have to work for a living, but all I wanna do is ride."

Hi Chris, Welcome! I'm glad to see another rider with the same cycle combo. My bikes are a '99 KLR(A13) and a bright red '97 ST1100. Good luck, Jim

I have exactly the same cycle combo - 99KLR and a 97ST. I have been tracking the list for several years now, and KLR's and ST's are surprisingly common stable mates. Randy Hoskins Jim & Shannon Morehead wrote:

Well, me too. Only mine is a Triumph Sprint ST. I reckon the dual-purposeness of the Sport Tourer appeals to the Dual Sport-er in us. It's amazing how after a long ride on the ST, my KLR seems like a toy. And after a ride on the KLR, my ST seems like a freakin rocket. Living on a dirt road, it can pretty hairy on the Sprint... Don't sneeze in first gear, unless you want to throw roost a mile... CA Stu -----Original Message----- Message: 25 Date: Tue, 18 Sep 2001 18:36:44 -0700 From: Randy.Hoskins@... Hi Randy, It is interesting that this combo is common. I guess versatile bikes have such a universal appeal that they are irresistible. Good to hear from you. Jim

Hi everyone/ I've been reading the posts here for a few weeks - just picked up an '02 A16 yesterday. I also have a '96 GPZ1100 ABS and the wife has a Super Sherpa '03. It's been difficult for us to ride together therefore the new KLR for me. The bike was an insurance recovery (stolen) and appears to be great engine and frame wise but the cosmetics need some work. I've already checked with my local stealer and RonAyers.com - I'm hoping maybe someone on the list will have some of these parts laying around they'd be willing to sell. Looks like I'll need a gas tank for an 02, the radiator shrouds and front fairing are pretty bad also. Side panels might be replaced depending on how they clean up. I'm not a new rider - I've had several dirt bikes (the last being a Yamaha DT400) but it's been a few years since I've been on the trails. I live in Bakersfield, CA (the 'Bake' is in the name for a GOOD reason) - anyway I'm looking forward to being an active member of the list (and learning the KLR). Tom Hayslett A16 - Ugly for now thayslett@... [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Tom, Congrats on your 'new' ride. The very parts you are looking for are currently on eBay at decent prices. These items are take-offs from military conversions that an outfit named cncace puts up. Search for KLR 650 on eBay. Hope this helps. Guy A16 At 06:42 AM 6/26/04 -0700, Tom Hayslett wrote:

Hi Tom, welcome to the list. I'm pretty new to the KLR also, and guess what? My wife and I have the same bikes! I think there are at least 3 more people on list with both KLR-650 and Sherpa. My street ride is a ZRX-1200. I ride the KLR a lot more often! Bakersfield... wow.... I would love to ride my KLR up to Johnsondale and beyond. But, my bike(s) are here in PA. We have a house in Lemoore (Kings County), but the only vehicle out there is a Toyota Corolla. If I ever spend much more time in CA, you betcha I'll have a KLR out there too. I'd love to do Death Valley and the Sierras. Someday soon, I'm going to.... Mike
