My 2007 has about 24k on it. It acts like it might need new shocks and or springs or both. I have a parts bike that has about 9k on it. Wondering if I should take the shock and or shock/springs from it and put on the 07. Or, should I go with after market on shock and or shock and springs. <><><><><> <><><><><> Robert, My first thought was a question. What's the purpose of a parts bike if you aren't going to use the parts? So my suggestion is to use parts from the low mileage parts bike and compare the difference. If you then don't like the suspension/handling spend some money on new parts. I also find I like the stock shock set at 3 when new and by 10,000 miles like to put it to 5. I like rebound at III for the life of the shock. I don't change rear springs although I have helped in one case on someone else's bike. Replacing the rear shock should only take about 15 minutes if that is all you do. Ask on list for a short breakdown of how to do it. If you follow the manual it takes a lot longer and is more involved. On my 03 KLR650 I've replaced the rear shock twice around the 14,000 smile mark each time. I could tell a difference with performance. On the front I replaced the stock springs with Progressives and also added Race Tech Gold Valve Emulators. I think I've gone through the forks twice as I don't like just draining oil for replacement as there is always a lot of crud in the bottom of the sliders that just doesn't get flushed out with drain plug removal. For folks wondering about the rear shock replacements as the rear shocks used to list for about $600... well, when I bought the bike used in 2003 I also bought two take off shocks from the guys that were converting KLRs for the Marines. As I recall I paid $85 per shock. And then Kawasaki was nice enough to replace the rear shock about two weeks before the extended warranty expired. I didn't buy the warranty originally, it just came with the bike when I bought it used. So I still have one more shock replacement to go and then I get to decide if I rebuild a shock or replace with something more custom. Hey Robert At 250lbs 6ft. I have an 07, Changing out "Good" stock springs, and installing Emulators, And a Beefy R shock made an AMAZING difference. ON AND OFF!!!! Road. 5-103 MPH (YA! 100 mph. DOWN HILL,14miles of it) on pavement. (Honest, I searched for a speed limit sign, ETC.) PARTS?????? bike..........Talk to me.

I also seem to have a shock situation. This week, when just riding city streets just hitting a man hole cover (at about 35 mph, maybe a half inch down from road) felt like someone grabbed me by the spine and tried to shake the meat off me. I started realizing I could feel every bump in the road. I have 9,000 miles on my second owner 2008 KLR. Brand new Heidenau tires, and the preset on 2. I am 5'10" and weigh about 210. Do I need to set it higher? Or is something wrong. I seem to remember when I first got it, I could ride over a 4" curve straight on at 10-12 mph and barely feel it.
