alaska??
I have been on the Pipeline road from Valdez to Fairbanks in a car. If you are going for scenery, from what I have seen and gathered, the most spectacular stuff is south of Fairbanks like Denali (which isn't on the pipeline road) and Wrangle National Park (which is off to the right) just past Valdez.
If you are going for macho, continue on past Fairbanks to Prudoe. I understand the road gets pretty crappy past there. The Brooks range is the only thing that I would be interested in up there. You will see a lot of animals wherever you go so watch out for them.
A couple of things if you have the time. Take the ferry from Whittier (south of Anchorage) to Valdez. You will see glaciers calving into the water on that. Coming into Valdez looks like pictures I have seen of Norway. Also, you can take a float plane ride out of Talkeetna area that takes you right up to Denali and circle around 5000 ft. Cliffs with moose out in the tundra.
Take the road down to Homer and or the Kenai peninsula. The thing I missed is watching the grizzlies eat their salmon out of the river over in that southwest area part of the state (I forget what it is called). I really regret just passing by Wrangle after getting back home and seeing it in my Nat. Geo. A friend who used to live up there told me to go to Fairbanks for whatever reason.
